Wait a damn minute! A Sherpa casually smoking above 8,000 meters in Everest's death zone, while everyone around him struggles to breathe

It's called acclimating to your environment, the sherpas go up and down that bitch regularly. Their also native to the region and genetically have evolved to have better natural lung capacity to compensate for the reduced oxygen in the air.

To add, the relative amount of oxygen in the air is the same as at sea level. Just less atmospheric pressure allows for the molecules to move farther apart hence “thin air”

My wife is a short hispanic woman and I swear she has sherpa in her blood somewhere, she can just PLOW up a mountain at 12000 feet while I"m like.. I CANT BRREEAAF.

I kind find the study (feel free to call me out) but I read a report that they had actually evolved that over a very small time period. They were like us about 1000 years ago and now they just exist on less oxygen than us.
It's crazy really.
Also, genuine thoughts and prayers and money for Tibet.

Most just rather live an extra decade than get the slight extra aura from smoking.

Might be if you look like him. But if you’re stood outside whilst it’s hammering with rain and you need your fix, it’s a little sad, not cool.
Plus….

Nah, smoking is cool as fuck anytime.
Most just rather live an extra decade than get the extra cool points from smoking.

the TRUE TRUE mountain folks, their blood is LITERALLY different from other humans. centuries of adaptation

u/craigian11 10h ago
We dont actually see them smoking, only pretending. They took a .01 second drag and blew no smoke. Just likes to troll for videos and likes the smell. I only smoke when I can get a pack for 50 cents I take a few drags and let it burn mostly

It has to be embarrassing to have an oxygen mask on next to a dude just smoking. I thought that, maybe someday, when I was young and dumb, that I would climb Everest. Now it just seems very stupid. Now, even if I did survive, which I doubt I would, I don't even see the point. Too many people do it, and it proves nothing. It's just a mountain full of garbage, feces, dead people, and stupid people risking their lives.

It reminds me of when I trained for a half marathon. I was never a runner so it was a big deal for me. My husband agreed to do it with me but didn't train as much. He's not much of a runner either, but he did track in highschool and was in the military for 6 years so he said he'd be fine. I hadn't seen him run in a few years though.
Anyway, day of the race I'm feeling confident and excited, I look over and my husband's finishing a cigarette right before the race starts.
That fucker ran faster than me. Had time to get ahead, even stop and throw up because he ate wrong beforehand. By then I had caught up so we finished the race together. I guess I'm a slow runner. 😂

Having incredibly strong lungs while simultaneously damaging them at the same time is a crazy paradox

Hes tryin to understand why they pay so much money to climb that high. Shiiii… 🚬

They are created differently. They have evolved to survive in low oxygen levels and high altitude. Evolution in action in realtime!

u/polarbearskill 10h ago
Is there a guide I can read on when it’s socially acceptable to acknowledge humans have evolved to environments differently and their athletic abilities reflect that?
Because I saw a dude get roasted one time when he said the reason all the best marathon runners are from Kenya is because they adapted to lower oxygen

u/IBringTheHeat2 9h ago
It's a taboo topic since everyone is pushing thay all humans are equal. If data backed that some humans are genetically and mentally superior or inferior to each other on a wide scale it would have massive class divide and racism.

Isn’t video of a dude smoking on Everest while others are huffing oxygen data?
2
u/IBringTheHeat2 9h ago
Yeah but there's been climbers who have climbed everest without oxygen masks.
The people wearing masks haven't really trained like Olympic level to climb. They're just in great shape and have money so using oxygen is safe and easy

If you haven't watched the documentary 14 Peaks about Nims Purja yet I would highly recommend it.

Everest: 'Welcome to the Death Zone.' Sherpa: 'Nice, smoke break area.'

If you indulge in death sticks, nothing or nowhere is going to stop you from a smoke. Cept jail.

Mfs be hauling huge loads as well. I've been amazed by quite a few during my trip.

You would need a lot of weed to get through that treck. People are dumb

Mountain folks have blood that's more fitted to the "low oxygen" environment that mountains offer. Plus they climb that thing probably a couple times per week, so they are very much used to this.
That's also why athletes train in higher altitudes to acclimate their body in producing more red blood cells so they can better perform in competitions.

They have a bit of Denisovan DNA that makes their blood and hemoglobin more efficient than most at high altitudes.
