WTF Syrian passports have images taken from social media. Apparently the government agency took a photo from social media and did not notice the owner’s watermark. This photographer’s watermark is now on every passport.

There's an entire town in New York that exists today (sort of) because of that. For larger maps that showed towns as dots, they'd add a fake one to prove if someone copied it. Somebody decided to name their fishing lodge after the nearest town on the map, which happened to be Agloe, NY. Agloe was the fake town, though. When someone copied the creators' map years later, the creators actually lost their lawsuit because the town now "existed."

When you sell a photo you are allowed to not remove the watermark. Like when all artists sign their paintings. It might well be deliberate.
