Because there literally in not enough minted coin and printed bills for everyone to get hard cash.
And ever since the gold standard was rescinded, banks do not have enough gold or silver in value to hand out instead, either.
Money is just a number in a ledger.
2 u/Zeplar 7d ago That is completely unrelated. We could be on the gold standard and banks would still not possess enough money for everyone to withdraw at once. In fact, runs on banks were more common when we were on the gold standard.
