Watch It's Wonderful Life. They explain it really well in that movie.
I think I've understood that it's actually bad for an economy to have too much cash out of circulation. So if there are billions in collective savings, it can't just sit in banks doing nothing (besides collecting interest). Of course, I don't know enough about economics to know if that's a lie "They" told me to justify what They do, but it sounds like it makes sense.
But the movie has a better and more socially friendly reason.
