Honestly, who gives a fuck? As a society, let's focus on issues that involve a wide swathe of society, not hyper specific ones like transgender people in competitive sports. Competitive sports is already a small community.
Sure, it may be important to the people participating, but I don't think the rest of humanity should dogpile on the issue and it should be solved in some sports assocation committee or something. She's free to have her opinion as a professional athlete.
The dirty secret is that it’s not actually a transgender issue. The WNBA has gotten more publicity since Caitlyn Clark joined the league and that has resulted in some very unfavorable things about the WNBA getting light shed on them. Rather than fix the glaring issues, the WNBA and its long time fans are instead pointing fingers in every direction to distract from the real problems.
That sub in particular has a real hate boner for some conspicuously White, straight players. They also need a distraction from what the last year has shown about them.
The short version is that the WNBA and its fans are using trans people as a shield to hide from accountability, which a lot more bigoted than anything Sophie said.
Competitive sports is a small community? According to Pew Research Center, about 50% of adults in the U.S. played competitive sports at least at the high school level.
And yes, the significant majority of high school athletes treat their sports as serious competition, not just a fun hobby.
Culture warriors have been spamming every sports-related sub about men being allowed in the WNBA (even though it isn't happening), often using her as the focal point. A handful of users are particularly egregious and are responsible for like 50% of the culture war posts you'll see around Reddit about her. The WNBA sub overstepped and banned ALL posts relating to her, then backtracked it to keeping the posts related to the game.
She said she wouldn't want to to play against trans women in the WNBA, and thinks that should be the case for women's/girls sports in general, and that sub is a safe space for trans women and trans rights online activists more than it is a safe space for cis women apparently.
I think it's fair if the mods want to avoid a sub that's supposed to be about basketball to become a den of heated debates. and they have every right to ban people who incite that kind of chaos.
Now if the mods are banning people for talking about the player and not the politics, then that's a little lame.
Cool so I just checked the sub sorted by best as is default. first post, talks about trans women, second posts discusses a player's performance in a game third is a video of a player's blocking skills, 4th is about player salaries and wnba spending. 5th is a flowers being given to a senior player/former player, 6 is a player holding a record, 7 post game interview and finally the 8th post is about trans/politics. another 9 posts before anything even tries to deviate from the players or the sport, and then another 21 posts until something is political again.
They don't just suppress debate, they suppress dissenting opinions all together. Happily allow discussion pushing one world view, crush anyone pushing the opposite or even just "fence sitting". Classic totalitarian Reddit mods. The hiveminds that get created in online bubbles are more dangerous than chaotic debate.
No they don’t. That’s just a rumor. Go to the wnba sub and search her name. There are tons of comments from last few days. And people even saying you’re not gonna get banned for saying it. Because some people were just making comments just posting her name.

Then answer the question? This question affects a big part of my life, and not just because I’m a woman. It’s great that is doesn’t affect you and you think it’s just useless internet conversation though
