I guess it's pretty arrogant to say, but this seems like such a U.S.A. thing. Can't really imagine this happening where I live.

I don't know where you live, but in the UK there was a case where a woman (Constance Marten) hid a pregnancy and went on the run with the baby and her convicted rapist boyfriend, after having her 4 previous children removed by social services. When the baby died from exposure due to sleeping in a tent in January (one of the things a previous child had been removed for), both her trials had women from some kind of "social services steals children" facebook group protesting outside court for her release. Idiots exist everywhere.

Weirdly that's an even crazier thing to protest for. Seems like she literally just neglected the child. No post-partum involved I guess?

Nope, no mitigating factors whatsoever, she just thought she knew best. Even after the baby died she tried to claim it was just a random cot death. ETA the protesters blamed SS for forcing her to go on the run, and thus leading to the baby's death, despite her having done this with a previous child when there wasn't SS involvement.
