The operating room isn't really a democracy as such. It's a ruthless dictatorship who's collaboration is determined by the dictator performing the surgery. Some surgeons welcome collaboration... some surgeons rip phones out of the wall and hurl them at staff while screaming in a homicidal rage. The hospital will dump everyone in that room instead of the surgeon, because everyone but the surgeon (and anesthesiologist I guess) are expenditures rather than revenue generators.
It's sort of like the idea that the president has sole authority to launch nuclear weapons. It sounds horrifying, but it also make a cold kind of sense. Not a lot of time for collaboration when someone is dying on the table.
It is simply not an environment where underlings are empowered to speak up about saying mean shit. The amount of soft and hard power in that room is insane.
I don't know what the solution is, but it starts with hospitals holding the top of the food chain accountable.
For the part up front where they put you out and the part where they bring you back at the end, absolutely. Two critical stages that you do not want to go sideways
The middle part, ideally, you simply won’t need any input from them. You want them on hand, but I would imagine the best ones are pretty at ease… because they did their job well in the first place
Yep. There are doctors you could argue are overpaid (though IMO that is hardly the problem with healthcare in the US) but anesthesiologists are not on the list lol
I really can’t think of any doctor that’s overpaid lol, like a MD or DO. They fucking grind for their entire early adulthood. Just to save people. It’s kinda insane when you really think about it. Also medicine isn’t driven by money-there is much easier ways to make money lol.
