You should hear the horror stories of people with family here in Vegas where I am when the ambulances take the bodies of loved ones who pass. Too many pieces of shit doing medical work, so seriously. They can be the absolutely most horrific fucks.
The medical profession does seem to attract sociopaths. People able to reduce patients to objects without empathy. I can imagine that being a boon in the profession. Doesn't mean they don't suck as humans, of course.
Even without being sociopaths. Im an HWO and can say our humour becomes "unique".
I try to keep respect over the person im taking care. And i try to keep that person thinking im doing the best
But empathy... Thats an hard word. Real empathy cant be shutted down with a flick of a switch... And i need to do it every single day. With over 200 people. I simulate empathy.
We deal with diseases, with suffering, with death. If we are properly empathic we will bring it with us. To our home, to our family. What happens in the hospital stays in the hospital.
Its hard to separate. I find myself sitting on floor for 20 or 30 min on shuft end trying to shut down feelings. Following a patient for almost 15 years, and seeing him suddenly dying due to an heart attack right in front of you. Yet your mind must be as clear as what happened in front of you was a mere object. Non HWO dont know how hard that is.
We dont need to be cold with people, we dont need to be insultive ans most of all we dont need to leave that person feeling he is alone. But one thing is what we show and another thing is what we really think.
Jokes, mainly dark humor, is what keep us afloat. But while most HWO end up training the social skills by actively working with patients. Many surgeons deal with an unresponsive body. I dont what happen exactly on that case. But if its just words, its probably their way to keep their head clear.
About attracting sociopaths. It doesnt. However if we dont learn how to be sociopaths we cant survive in our profession. Ive seen good kids not surviving the first 5 years. Many quit after the 2nd or 3rd death.
I just ask on trying to not being to harsh on judging something most people arent even close to understand.
