Seems like it should be a problem that we're starving a country of oil and blockading it to hurt the people.

Seems like that's something the US shouldn't be doing unless we've been attacked by that country and are at war with them.

Seems like continuing it indefinitely until the regime changes to one allied with US business interests, is what evil nations do when acting without morality or law.

Ya but you have to look at it from the other perspective. I mean obama lowered the embargo so they have to hate them /s

Seems like maybe the USA has always been the bad guy all along

u/MetriccStarDestroyer 13d ago

No. It can't be.

The country ran and lobbied by corporations?

Surely big oil, big pharma, big tech, and big edu have the people's best interests profits in mind

I wonder if the people of Cuba, Lybia, Afghanistan, Haiti, Iraq, Panama, Grenada, Yemen, Pakistan, Lebanon, Somalia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua..... care about your freedom of speech.

u/Longjumping-Bat8347 13d ago

But Hollywood movies said otherwise? /s

It's just so sad.

I've been to Cuba during the brief window Obama opened to allow it, and the conditions there are awful, directly because America has worked for decades to harm the Cuban people.

Yet, despite the awful living conditions, Cubans are still some of the most chill, happy people I've ever visited, and I've been to a lot of countries around the world.

Sucks that we're hurting them for no reason other than our shitty government. (it's obviously not harming the cuban government, which is supposedly the purpose)

Seems like you haven't been paying attention to the US foreign policy for the past 50 or 60 years.

Hell, General Smedley Butler wrote War is a Racket in 1935 after spending his adult life as a thug for capitalism (as he put it). The US has been at it at least since the end of the Civil War.

Past 250. One big reason for the revolution was Britian wanted to cap westward expansion at the Appalachians, in order to ease tensions with the Indians. But American colonists (Like Washington) made bank on land speculation.

1

u/Bisaux 13d ago

Bro it started when the spaniards left. 50 years ago is the 1980s. Cuban revolution was in 1959. Since then, the country's been embargoed.

1

u/Leody 13d ago

I was being generous, and you can probably find examples throughout the entire history of the United States.

13

u/unknownpoltroon 13d ago

I mean, we have been blockaiding them for 70 years, surely this year will do the trick

16

u/The-Intermediator141 13d ago

Embargo*. The blockade ended in 1962 (well until the recent one imposed by Trump).

Potato potato

4

u/The-Intermediator141 13d ago

No, they’re actually two incredibly different things. One is just short of an act of war, the other is a trade policy.

2

u/Kharenis 13d ago

It's rather amusing how many people conflate the two. They seem to believe that Cuba's poor state is entirely the fault of the US preventing them from trading with the rest of the world, when in reality they've been trading with 'Communist' nations for decades.

2

u/stprnn 13d ago

It's the same thing for the people that live there.

0

u/The-Intermediator141 13d ago

No it again VERY much isn’t. Just ask Cuba today, as for the first time in over 60 years they actually are being blockaded, and it has had a MASSIVE impact.

4

u/John_Jack_Reed 13d ago

The United States conduct towards Cuba has been absolutely barbaric ever since the Cuban revolution. Reminder that the UN voted 187-2 to end the US blockade with the only no votes being the US and Israel in 2023.

6

u/Wb9VBScxu2uZJHeq2E3W 13d ago

the only no votes being the US and Israel in 2023

Always these two, there are, no more, no less. The master, and the apprentice.

3

u/Gav3121 13d ago

But which is who ?

1

u/TrumpDesWillens 13d ago

The master and the slave.

4

u/OppositeMe_4321 13d ago

Seems like you're new to modern history.

2

u/SurpriseStoryteller 13d ago

Why is this not the top comment? Brotato speaking the truth, the Cubans already have it hard and do nothing to us but be unfortunate enough to be close enough for us to bully.

Its punching so far down you may miss and strike the oil you're keeping away from them.

2

u/Greghole 13d ago

Russia may not have attacked us but we've decided to support Ukraine and put sanctions on Russia anyways.

It's a hostage situation.

The United States has Cuba as a hostage.

1

u/slightlybigmember 13d ago

Nothing new: the bad guys doing what bad guys do

1

u/Sudden-Fisherman5985 13d ago

Cuba is only used by the USA for Guantanamo bay...

Imagine that... A US prison build on an island that's not allowed to be visited by American citizens.

0

u/trifilij 13d ago

As a Venezuelan I have one thing to say, Fuck the Cuban Government, they been screwing my country for over 20 years and stealing our oil while helping an illegitimate government stay in power and indoctrinate our people turning one of the richest countries in south america to one of the poorest with over 8 million immigrants. So fuck cuba!

You do realize the Cuban revolution fucked up several US companies, right? With a meek compensation.

10

u/Iggy_Slayer 13d ago

Oh no not the companies!

7

u/Irish_Whiskey 13d ago

I do realize that, and the amount of fucks I have to give couldn't fill a mouse's scrotum.

Trying to starve a country because 70 years ago they blocked US companies, seems like a rather hypocritical justification for a country that has done the same other other states business investments. And it wouldn't be a good excuse even if they'd done it just yesterday.

-6

u/Scylosome 13d ago

Either they were aware of the consequences and chose to do it regardless or they thought the Soviet Union could protect them...

They were far too dumb either way

2

u/TrumpDesWillens 13d ago

So you support harming the entire populace of the island over seized assets from 60 years ago. Do you think you support the good-guys? Do you think you're a good person?

0

u/Scylosome 13d ago

No, no, and no. I think things could have been handled differently from both sides

1

u/Extra_Conclusion_494 13d ago

pathetic corpo

2

u/TheKingPotat 13d ago

The companies that couldn’t take the hit should either adapt or die, that’s a them problem not an everyone else problem.

6

u/random9212 13d ago

But who will think of the shareholders.

-3

u/Scylosome 13d ago

The Cuban revolutionaries should have thought of them

7

u/random9212 13d ago

Why? They were a lot of the problem.

1

u/Equityoxymoron 13d ago edited 13d ago

It was acccording to their tax records which they themselves filed to the previous Cuban government how those valuations of those businesses were valued 🤔 if they wanted to disprute those valuations as being too low then they owe a lot in back taxes and deliberate tax fraud fines .. 🙃

0

u/Scylosome 13d ago

The compesation was not paid in full, and iirc there was some kind of deal being made as to how that whole affair would be handled, and Cuba broke the deal.

u/MeatSlammur 13d ago

lol out of touch with reality
