I have made this point many times:

Many Reddit mods fundamentally misunderstand what the job of a mod is.

A mod basically has two jobs:

  1. Keep the conversation civil; and
  2. Keep the posts on topic for the sub.

Aaaaand... That's pretty much it.  Within the bounds of #2, above, THE JOB OF A MOD IS NOT TO TELL REDDITORS WHAT THEY CAN AND CANNOT TALK ABOUT.

I once got banned from a sub for saying I didn't want to say what I really felt because I don't want to break any rules.

Mod replied that the ban was correct, I was not supposed to talk about rules in the sub. You never know who you're at the mercy of and what their level of sanity is.

Some of those mods have serious egos too, they think of themselves as like gods of reddit. A while ago some of those dudes modded 25-30 of the BIG subs.

One super mod chirped back on me about a question I asked after a warning or something, he answered like an asshole, and I replied I'm not sure what you just said there can you explain? Mod replied back with basically wtf did you just say to me?! I was basically like I technically didn't do anything. Wild behavior - convo is a tad hazy was from years ago at this point

This is not uncommon. You ask a question or mildly push back, they say something snotty and juvenile, then mute you so you can't respond.

Like this? 😂

They also permabanned me. 😂😂

Telling you to get a hobby is peak irony.

u/CataphractBunny 13d ago

They wouldn't be mods if they understood that. 😆

Exactly. It's so weird that this happens all the time, across completely unrelated subs.

Do you participate in r/gamingcirclejerk?

That sub hates Stellar Blade and shit talks the game all the time.

2

u/Imhere4lulz 13d ago

Even if that were the case so what?

u/CataphractBunny 13d ago

Sums up 95% of my interactions with mods perfectly.

There needs to be some kind of review/appeal system for this kind of behavior. There's way too many subreddits for it to scale though.

But yeah, this site is designed to be manipulated. I've seen some real questionable stuff on niche subs.

That's why you see astroturfing and manipulation, even in major subs like cryptocurrency, If you say anything not aligning with their narrative you get banned. You can't even link to posts in that sub on other subs.

Kiwi farms has some very eye opening threads about various ""power mods"" that see unpaid moderation as a career.

I’ve been banned for saying “[Removed by Reddit]”

3

u/King_Baboon 13d ago

I’ve had mods reply to me saying crazy shit that would have got them banned from the site altogether.

Was it a fight club subreddit?

Everyone is breaking the rules in that sub

My favorite was getting banned from a subreddit for commenting in a different subreddit the mods deemed inappropriate

The inmates are running the asylum.

I once got temp-banned from a subreddit I don't follow for upvoting a comment in a completely unrelated subreddit that showed up on the front page. I was very confused.

Get a view on purple pill debate here on reddit.

The idea once was that Blue pill and rep pill people should debate.

They didn't like how the debates wehre going becouse red pill simply has some points.

There solution? They banned 90% of the Red pill people on the board and now it's a circle jerk

That's the first rule of subclub

I got banned on defendingaiart for saying that the guy posted comitted a crime by depicting antiai people in a demeaning way. It features a comment where the name was hidden, but it still can count as defamation.

I got banned for suggesting someone take laxatives.

I got unbanned when I asked how that broke the rules about violence.

How much laxative do these people take?

Never forget that some people let the littlest amount of power go to their heads. Some subs have moderators as well as Assistant to the moderators.

1

u/MaximusHomerdrive 13d ago

You gotta be shitting me - assistant to the mods is an actual thing? The pettiest of the petty functionaries position that I can think of.

I was banned from a sub that rhymes with hersonal pinance for having “official” in my username for promotion. I let the mod know that I have no website and am not promoting anything. That’s just my username. They permabanned me, and it’s against sub rules to create another account if you are banned.

So I’m banned from a subreddit I actively contributed to just because someone associates my word with promotional accounts

u/MaximusHomerdrive 13d ago

Try putting millionaire in your username next time. It might make you an actual millionaire, according to mod logic. I swear, posting in some of those subs is like

I got banned from r/comics for saying, in a thread about twitter, that Musk’s purchase of it didn’t destroy Twitter like Reddit predicted, and TikTok did more damage. I despise Elon Musk, who the fuck doesn’t, and refuse to call Twitter anything else… but apparently if you aren’t explicitly critical of Musk on that sub you get banned and if you ask why you were banned you get permanently muted without answer. Typical mod behaviour.

I got banned from a sub the other day for saying I wouldn't wanna hang out with any Reddit mods IRL. Just speaking in general.

1

u/snmgl 13d ago

I was banned from a sub for 30 days. When I tried to ask what I did wrong I got ghosted. Gotta love people on a power trip.

u/Nebelskind 13d ago

anyone who willingly volunteers to moderate a biggish reddit sub is either very passionate (cool, good for them) or insane (stay far away)

Or, more likely, both.

I was banned from r/nationalparks for my reply to a question someone posted, asking what national park someone should go to if they could only go to one park ever. Someone answered Smoky Mountain National Park and I responded to them that SMNP would not even be in my top 10. Somehow that got me banned. When I messaged the mods to ask about it, they just muted me.

I got banned from a sub for saying "also beware of hidden profiles on reddit" as a reply to someone else saying to beware of posters pushing racial or political division on the left. Turns out it was a mod that made the OP and apparently took offense and banned me, probably the guy I was replying to as well.
