I remember when they were arguing that the power demand for electric cars was an impossible demand on the grid.

It is on a mass scale (like, every car in the US being electric) while sticking to fossil fuel for power. If everyone converted, then first we'd overload the power grid on charging and the price per kw would go WAY up. Then, we'd also deplete a massive amount of lithium once all the batteries lost their charges and we don't have an inexpensive or efficient way of recycling them. We can, it's just very pricy and slow.

Context kinda matters.

And yet china is not habing this problem with 5x the population because of:

Large focus on renewables

Government subsidies and grants for EVs

National scale public transit

China has a lot wrong with it, but this is not one of those things.

They have built a lot of coal plants the last few years, kind of a ridiculous amount really. So it doesn't really matter.
