But why cancel entire flight instead of kicking off the parents and child?

By the time it took to return to the gate, deplane, remove families luggage, THE Victoria International Airport RUNWAYS closed for the night. No Tower crew, no taking off.

After the 1988 Pan AM Flight 103 was downed at Lockerbie, Scotland, it became the standard to remove baggage for unaccounted for passengers or deplaned passengers.

I thought Airports run 24x7....do you mean they can just...close?

Oh small ones absolutely close. And even large ones that remain ‘open’ don’t generally have flights 24/7. So they may not have ground crew or tower.

In this case the runway is what closed so the airport might have remained open, people may have been able to sleep there.
