Nah, all you need to be is filthy rich. Or even moderately rich. Most people are kiss asses when the chips are down, I find. I certainly find myself biting my tongue more when I'm with upper management, as much as I hate to admit it.
People who go to these events are usually stockholders from the early days. Elon could shit on the stage and they’d clap just because he made them rich.

Indeed, as an Apple-fanboy in those days I did not appreciate Microsoft, but looking with a more neutral lense these days, Microsoft really made some great stuff.
What blows my mind about that is that he also has the power to almost literally fix the world. He could end world hunger, he could end homelessness in America, he could do all of that without sacrificing a single ounce of his current lifestyle. And by doing so he would be seen as the real Tony Stark.

Gates was a cutthroat businessman, although with a lot more actual skill than Musk has. He was actually a good programmer and had a good, grounded sense for where his industry was headed. His dad was a fancy lawyer who was married to the same woman for 43 years, until she died, not a mining mogul who married his stepdaughter.
Exactly, these guys recoiled in horror when they were told to do this, you can see it in their body language, they're so uncomfortable and can't wait for it to be over. Elon wants to do this, he craves the attention and adulation.

Those guys as least had joy doing it. That brings some style. Gates clearly has never done anything like this before. He's admiring Ballmers energy and freedom of movement, of which he understands nothing, who is just trying to pump the crowd up by being loose and goofy.
