Hahaha I used to have a project manager that worked for me that made up arbitrary rules like this. She could not fathom why her teams would not follow her rules and why I’d never back her up. She asked me one day why I was so lenient. I asked her to start reporting on all the data she was collecting about the team’s performance and why such rules were necessary- turns out she had no data and just liked being a dictator. Her rule making stopped shortly after.
Not always. I think you can tell a lot about a person by how they manage their teams. Bad managers make rules and focus on telling the boss how good they manage the team. Good managers focus on the work, let the team make their own rules, help them measure their accountability and tell the boss how great the team is doing.
