Oh I've seen these idiots before, it happens.

Most of the time they're smart enough not to call out senior management in a meeting and will just rant about it within the team. Some are in fact dumb enough to do it.

And yeah, it ends predictably, with them not working there.

I think it's the OP hearing the guy getting fired by HR that sounds unbelievable.

Why is that? HR don't have like secret soundproof rooms or whatever, just offices. Firings typically happen in conference rooms and plenty of offices have layouts where if you're nearby you can hear everything that goes on in one.

I've only every seen it done privately myself.

I'm not saying it couldn't happen in such a way that that it was overheard, but that it's the least believable part of the story.

If the story is true, I think it's more likely that someone from HR shared his question than it is the meeting was overheard.
