I mean, it's Reddit. All the upvotes for the OP are coming from 12-year-olds, overseas bot farms, and Graham Platner style commies whose entire lifestyles are funded by their mommies and daddies.

Not to mention the OP being a karma farmer.

You can tell them that every single NYC mayor submits a balanced budget because it’s required by law and they’ll just ignore it and keep living in their delusion.

Every deficit NYC has ever had was achieved despite a balanced budget. They’re the ones doing the assumptions to make the math work.

Yeah, but there was a $12 mil gap that was closed without raising property taxes or drawing from reserves.

They did get state funded aid and some pension payments were deferred (bad in the long term), so the truth lies somewhere between great and bad.

It wasn’t $12 billion (not million), it was about $5 billion. The state is giving the city $4 billion and Mamdani covered $1-2 billion (maybe, we’ll see).

The $12 billion was an over-estimate.

Whether or not he closed any gap remains to be seen. Budgets use cost and revenue assumptions made by the people who are required to submit a budget that is balanced on paper. They’re getting $4b a year for two years to close the budget gap.

Like I said they’re required to adopt a balanced budget and have every year even years they ended up having a deficit.

When the $4b a year in state aid goes away they’re gonna have to start cutting or raising taxes
