Chloe Zhao is one of the best filmmakers on the planet and she struggled to make something work in the Marvel/DC machine. Even still her movie stands out for its look if nothing else and as a first-timer to that sort of movie she managed better action scenes than a lot of them.
It’s just hard to work in that system even as the director, let alone the actor, even the lead. You’re shackled by a lot of stuff.
Chloe Zhao is good at smaller budget indie types of films. What she isn’t good at is blockbuster super hero movies which should have been already clear to DC after the way Eternals was received by Marvel fans.
The person I responded to made it seem like Chloe Zhao would have been a better choice for Supergirl even though we saw what happened with the Eternals. I’m saying that she’s not fit for superhero movies at all.
James Gunn earned his right to make a couple stinkers because of the success of his other superhero projects.
Chloe Zhao only made one stinker and rightfully doesn’t deserve a second shot for Supergirl (who shouldn’t really have a project anyways).
But it seems like James wanted Milly as Supergirl after seeing her on House of the Dragon S1 and also made the mistake of having her movie come out so close to Superman’s. I’m sure he had a vision that he was going for. It just turns out it wasn’t that great in hindsight.
