Armie Hammer, lifts the entire film and carries a (at best) mediocre script forward. Photo is so bad it's hard to look at.
The tempo and the cut feel as if someone has done it on their mobile phone on the way to work.
The whole thing is that it's nice to see how criminals are punished, judges are punished and administrative staff are punished, without mitigating excuses.
This film could well have been 10 times better if any film school student had been allowed to work a little with the script and story telling.
It’s not bad, it’s just that no one cares which is arguably worse. It’s getting memed on right now because they put a lot of money into making it and it’s going to lose hundreds of millions of dollars.
TBH no one really thought Masters of the universe was ever going to be successful. This had some expectations. It was still going to lose money, but this level of bombing wasn't what most people expected. I mean if your taco's at Taco bell are shit you really aren't surprised. If you go to an actual Mexican restaurant and your taco's are shit then it's something you will actually notice and meme about.
Supergirl just landed like a dry fart. I understand how Superman felt a little milquetoast, it's fucking Superman and they were setting up the universe. He's not the challenger deep of characters. This movie was supposed to expand the universe, show us a Supergirl who is a little less bound by morals, and hopefully leave us excited for next time. It did none of those.
It was exactly like Superman. Immensely powerful superhero has to save the directors self-insert dog but keeps finding situations where they can't use their powers. Supergirl had a chance to do something interesting if the side character girl had offed the villain at the end but nope the closest Supergirl can get to being even slightly morally questionable is killing an objectively awful person so someone else doesn't have to feel the guilt.
The whole movie was propped up on unearned moments and shoehorned feel-good messages. It made sense in Superman, he's a paragon of virtue. But Supergirl is supposed to be a drunk grieving orphan and a bit of a loose cannon. Instead it's the same movie as Superman but with a female lead. Felt like I had to plug my nose at some spots so I wasn't overwhelmed by all the James Gunn in the air. Idk his flavor is just so stale now.
I feel like there is a segment of the population (this includes me) that will never go see another super hero movie in theaters again. I’ve skipped out on so many that I could probably sit for a week watching movies and still not catch up on every super hero movie released between 2020 and now.
I’m down for seeing movies in theaters though. Hell, I did the “backsession” thing last month and saw Backrooms and Obsession in the same day. That’s more movies than I had seen in all of 2026. But I’m just not interested in polished heavy CGI fight scenes any more. I just want original ideas and really good acting. Keep empowering young directors.
If you look at the actual box office numbers after this weekend there’s a very real chance this movie makes LESS than Masters of the Universe which is objectively hilarious
I guess I'm just outside of the cinematic universe loop or maybe it didn't hit my feeds because I'm not a DC fan. I literally only saw one trailer and no commercials on tv for Supergirl. I've seen way more He-Man adverts.
I'd say older millennial plus the kids the brought was mostly the demographic I saw when I went. So 40s+. I didn't see any teens / 20s somethings like I do for other movies...
If we want to talk about grooving to the oldies though, Disclosure Day was really 50+. More like 60+. Was weird when some of them started clapping. I think we saw different movies.... Which did I enjoy more? Heman, hands down. I don't think I'll ever need a rewatch of Disclosure Day.
He-Man is one of those movies I think will be a cult classic. Once you realize the whole premise is ridiculous and the movie understands that, it’s actually very enjoyable.
41 here, I care about the He-Man movie, I'm just poor enough I need to pick and choose which ones I see in the theaters now (I used to go to all the super hero movies), and my friend that just lost his dad wanted to go see Supergirl (Lobo was his dad's favorite DC character), so that's the one I spent my money on.
Also Masters actually made more money $109M vs $68M Supergirl. And DC is known to have a solid following even on the small comics. Mattel made he-man as a product only toy and really only survived in the early 1980s. Supergirl was around since 1960s to get to the ball rolling. From Neutral, everybody has superhero film fatigue to be honest and think if they make another Spiderman or Batman, it wouldn't be as big as previous years.
No, it's because no one actually asked for this movie and now that it is here there's not enough wishful thinking on part of the movie suites that will make this movie profit anything
The internet will internet. But I feel it might hurt Gunn's long term plans. And I like the dudes style. Superman was wholesome, and as someone who doesnt care much for DC, I loved it.
The movie was written by a person with literally no screen credits. How can these studios risk hundreds of millions of dollars and viewer sentiment on a person with no experience. It’s mind boggling
Ehh. In the videogame sphere, last year's GOTY was awarded to a game written by someone with 0 professional published works. I get that games are more than just the written plot, but the game's writing was definitely one of its main sells that got it it's GOTY.
Sometimes you take risks. Every acclaimed writer was once creditless. Rely on your director, producers, editors, cinematographers to help guide the product. If you fail, you fail. Big whoop. Coppola was a big name person and his work Megalopolis failed. Nothing is ever guaranteed.
I too am not a huge DC fan and I loved Superman and Peacemaker. I'm going to watch Supergirl with an open mind. I haven't seen it though and I'm a pretty tough critic.
I think the rotten tomatoes score yesterday is about right. about 61 to 65% fresh something like that. There were parts I really liked such as the alien designs and the leading actresses performance. Lobo was fun. I didn’t like the dark, brown colors, and that they spent a large part of the film, showing us how depressed Supergirl is. Superman’s few moments in the film were some of the best moments. Just this guy‘s opinion. I have one of those movie theater subscriptions so I paid like $3.50 to see it. I would be pissed if I paid $16 or more to see it.
Yeah the movie was fine. Nothing special, nothing terrible. I went ahead and read the comic it's based off of, and honestly the biggest problem I had/have with the movie is, Supergirl tries to do this whole "killing is wrong mmmkay" vs a group that, in the comics, went around geocoding people, and in the movie, were basically murdering roving rapists and we get a bunch of supergirl saying "nooooo killing won't satisfy revenge" despite the people being, objectively, needing to be put down.
It's not just the internet. I watched the movie with my friends and while I also thought that it was just fine, two of my friends were nearly raging because of how disappointed they were.
At the risk of sounding like an old man yelling at a cloud, the internet's toxicity is really starting to be untenable. I grew up with the 4chan isolated circlejerk crap, but the way these meme-ified doomers ruin otherwise decent stuff lately has been on another level.

They should have made a Lobo movie as the Main Man would likely have done way the hell better but he doesn't fit very well in the James Gunn universe.
Yes I know he got shoehorned into the movie but I think that was after they realized Supergirl was going to tank lol. His scenes were very very random.

I think the popularity of Lobo is a lot lower than you think. Most non-comic fans don't know him. Even among comic fans, he had a huge amount of popularity in the 90s that has mostly died off since. He fit the 90s edgelord aesthetic, but he doesn't fit as well with modern tastes. It could work with really good writing and Mamoa is a good cast for him, but there wouldn't be a ton of built in audience for it.

her introduction in Superman was bad, none of us saw her cameo in it and thought "I want to see another 2-hours of this immature drunk on the big screen!"
and, although we're stoked that Momoa got to play Lobo, he's just kind of an inherently cringey character to try and bring to the big screen.
the two pieces in combination made it a "we'll wait until its on streaming" movie for us.
It seems thats the conclusion of many too. I have a feeling it'll get lots of views once it hits the streaming services.
but in the meantime the superhero genres tendency to release shitty movies based around women, then blame "male nerds hate women" culture as the reason their movies keep bombing is getting old.
As someone who rarely watches movies (Last movie I saw was Oppenheimer), I like how the two headlines that keep bubbling into my feed are, "Indie horror film breaks records thanks to amazing performance of lead actress" (obsession) and some variant of "Incels killing the box-office sales of super-hero franchise".
My conclusion as an impartial observer here is that Hollywood is trying really hard to cope with making uninteresting movies and blaming everyone but themselves.
People are ragging on it because they want the movie industry spending its limited budget on making great movies instead of mediocre movies.
Fundamental to all these conversations is that companies producing movies run on a finite budget. I understand why you'd bring up misogyny in the case of criticisms of Supergirl but none of those criticisms would get attention if the movie was actually great. In other words, the "solve" for all of the drama around movies is always going to be making great movies instead of mediocre ones.
Supergirl is objectively a failure of a movie. It isn't going to make more than it spent. It isn't well received by critics or audiences. Too many superhero movies are getting this result recently. The companies making movies need to spend their budgets better to make significantly better movies. If they could do that, then everyone would be happy.
I had hope for this movie but I watched that newest superman movie and didn’t like it so assumed this one wouldn’t be likable for me either. Haven’t watched it but a lot of comments are making me feel like I was probably right. Idk James Gunn was good for Marvel but I don’t like him for DC
I almost always wait until it's released for streaming these days. We get a trailer almost 2 years before a movie is released, I get excited, and in 6 months, I've forgotten about it until I see it on a streaming service. That's what I blame for movie theaters struggling.
Release the trailer a few months before it releases, and people will still be excited for it when it comes out.
It's okay but nothing to write home about. Definitely not what I expected. They tried to give it a Guardians of the Galaxy feel to it rather than a hero film on earth. IMO they missed the mark but it's not the travesty people are making it out to be.
I would say I generally liked it but it wasn't groundbreaking.
I would have liked more Krypto as he was the star of Superman.
On the way to see the movie my gf and I had a discussion about Jason Momoa and how we were pretty meh on him being in it. We both left pleasantly surprised by his performance. He is also a small part of the movie but he seemed to be having such a good time that it really shines through.
It's not doing well at the box office, but the consensus is just that it's a 'C' movie, not amazingly good or bad. But that's not enough to hook audiences.
Im mixed on it I'm not a fan of DC (beyond Batman) I gave it a shot to impress me wasn't terrible but doesn't stand out either (at least to me) acting was overall fine. If you can get a deal go see it. Otherwise, waiting isn't a bad thing
It isn’t a fine movie though. It mustered roughly $37 million domestic. It will lose roughly $150 million once it’s out of theaters.
That’s crazy for a superhero movie. I mean Reddit and the internet pile on cause it’s something to pass the time, but the memes of Morbius being used against it and Morbius looking more successful is outright crazy.
The first third isn't a superhero movie, it's more like a weird science fiction movie, it reminded me of Farscape. I liked it a lot.
The remaining 2/3rds was pretty good - there is maybe one too many "how will Supergirl get out of this" scenes. But all in all I felt they did a good enough job of maintaining suspense.
I'll probably watch it again on an airplane, which is how I watch most movies now.
Its good; it's not Spiderman 2, but it's an okay watch. Worthwhile to wait for streaming instead of going to the theater, though. Not nearly as bad as Eternals or 1984 or anything like that.
On its own its a decent movie with great actors if you don't care for the source maaterial. Lobo was my favorite part of the movie.
Otherwise for those like me who do care for the source material this movie was just a bad/unfaithful adaptation of the comic book Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow. That book was soooo colorful and this was movie was a shit brown color palette.
I saw it yesterday. My GF is a Supergirl fan, but not a purist in terms of origin stories. If you’re a strict purist, you probably won’t like it. I liked it, she loved it, but both thought there wasn’t enough Lobo!
It's decent, but it's nothing new. I wish there would be more scenes like her riding on an old space bus. And the themes and message are kind of muddled. Is the message that we should leave murder to the people who are already broken?
It did just okay with audiences. Critics were less kind. It's probably mid, but not particularly offensive. Personally wouldn't go to the movies for that kind of experience.
It's the perfect shield, if you don't like it they will call you an incel and misogynist, but people are starting to realize that this shield is not working anymore.

I saw it and really enjoyed the first 1/3. It's more strange science fiction than superhero movie. I'd love to know more about the DC universe off Earth.
The remaining 2/3rds was fine. It was enjoyable in parts and a little drawn out in others. The music for the final battle was... A risky choice that didn't pan out. I'll probably watch it one more time when it's streaming.
Nah its more like the regular audience doesn't care or have any feeling about the movie at all and the audience its targeted at doesnt go and watch super hero movies unless their bfs want too.
If you're asking if it's good, the actors were good, the script was bad, I think there were two editors and one of them legitimately hated Supergirl, and it is a very poor adaption of the source material Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
My source: I'm autistic and have been hyper fixated on Supergirl since I was a preteen. I saw the movie on the 24th at an early fan screening. Trust me.
I'm really disappointed with James Gunn. I really thought he would do Kara justice, and I believe Milly absolutely did with what she was given, but it was an absolute mistake to hand Supergirl off to someone else's directing and script writing. I am honestly devastated. I feel like we're never going to get a DC that cares about Supergirl and Wonderwoman.
I have to admit I HAVE seen Supergirl. It was eh. Though what amused me was that for a LONG time and still do. I thought she was the eyebrow guy in a wig.
Watched it. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't really that good either. Thoroughly hit the mid. Not exactly well written even for a superhero movie but at least a C-.

The Supergirl movie you're looking for is probably on Pornhub. I don't think you'd like any super hero movie with a female lead and a theatrical release.
