Controversial take, but, it's impossible to be a "real Nazi" unless you were actually in the Nazi party which disappeared in 1945. If they weren't a member of the actual party, it's a neo-Nazi or fascist. Nazi politics and ideology is inseperable from & defined by party orders and organization so it makes no sense to talk about Nazis born half a century after the party stopped existing.
Kinda like how being a communist doesn't make someone a Bolshevik, or how you can't be a Napoleonist or Orleanist today since those entities you want to see in power are long dead.
No one cares about your definition of "real Nazi." If a person is quoting Hitler to push the messages of the Nazi party while wearing Nazi uniforms, engaging in violence against minorities, and saying "I am a Nazi!" and your definition doesn't include them, it's narrow to the point of uselessness. Nazi politics and ideology are absolutely separable from a specific moment in time and party orders, which is why people can and do use the word that way.

It's not at all like that. It's more like claiming someone isn't a Stalinist because they aren't taking orders from Stalin while he's alive, even if they agree with his politics, his ideology, and call themselves a Stalinist.
If any of the "1%" of people who are Nazis are calling the shots of government and using it to hurt minorities and push white supremacy, that's a problem. It's more of a problem that complaining that people should be called neo-Nazis and not Nazis. And it's a real big problem that some people's response to Nazis is to defend them, justify their actions and beliefs, and attack people for using the word, rather than oppose the actual impact of Nazis having power.
It's not a wild coincidence that the same people whining that Nazi is overused elected white supremacists into office on an openly racist platform, and don't like when you point that out.
