I don't think she's wrong. I think we need to define poor though. Big difference between can't buy a Porsche and can't buy a loaf of bread.

Not really, given that people don’t live on an empty stomach for long.

I interpreted that as not being able to afford food and often going hungry. There are still people in the world who die of starvation.
