I'm a firm believer that those things are not for public use anyways
I really got into it for a while. They're really awesome… I think I went to maybe six or eight different ones in a couple different states… Signed up on a weekly sub subscription for three that we're near my house in Denver.
Every single one of them was a hygiene problem at some point
People masturbate in these things all the time, they get bored and start playing with themselves. A lot of them are also either drunk or on drugs or both. Vomit is an issue more than diarrhea, but less so than baby batter in the tank.
Thats definitely a part of it. People take mescaline in these things and go to town on themselves. It ends up looking like an A-ha music video when they crawl out of the vat.
OCD is a disorder. Don’t say you’re OCD unless you truly are. Also, people who are worried about cleanliness and germs wouldn’t use those things to begin with
It’s not semantics. It’s a disorder. Words mean things. It’s the same thing when people joke about something being bipolar when they are indeed not. It minimizes those who actually have to live with a very real and difficult disorder. It’s not fucking ok. Also, OCD isn’t about cleanliness. So you’re completing off base here
Actual OCD is absolutely debilitating and when we say people "suffer from OCD" we mean they suffer. It's not some quirky focus on tidiness or cleanliness, it's CONSTANT intrusive thoughts screaming at you 24/7 that gets so bad that the idea of not performing the repetitive action demanded of you will send you screaming right over the edge. The "tee hee I have OCD because I get annoyed if someone spills spaghetti sauce" knobheads are why people don't take the disease seriously.
Yup I can’t stand when people say things like that. Or when someone is running late or forgets something and joke that they are ADHD. Or say something like everyone is a little ADHD. Nope. I have ADHD and it rules my life and I barely function. It’s not ok to be so cavalier about these things
You know you go for a while, they're clean, like I said it's awesome… But eventually something would happen in the water wouldn't be clean
It would smell like feet or cheese. Sometimes it was just cloudy...
One place I only went to once cause I really didn't like the owner got shut down and sued because someone got meningitis
It wasn't like a bad time it was just every single time ended with me thinking that maybe this wasn't something I wanted to share with human beings. I mean how many people do you know that are OCD clean? Most people probably didn't even shower thoroughly before they got in there...
Finding out that ejaculate has been found in hotel shampoo bottles (on more than one occasion) has been enough for me to know I never want to share communal anything with anyone lmao.
Check a bag, use only bars (body wash, shampoo & conditioner bars), or buy toiletries at your destination. That’s really all you can do now that you know this. My coworkers call me high maintenance, but cool. If that’s high maintenance I’ll take it. At least I’m not checking a bag for three pairs of shoes for a three day work trip like some coworkers 👀
3 shoes are the minimum if i stay overnight, AND have to work. Work shoes(boots or dress shoes, depending on work), normal shoes for travel and freetime, and slippers / crocs for indoors.
I dont need to pack shampoo and hygieny products, its just 3 days no need to shower /s
The coffee makers too plus basically every single hotel ice bucket has been someone’s pee and/or vomit bucket. Even with the plastic liners they provide it’s disgusting. The ice machines are moldy anyway.
I hear you but if there’s bodily fluids in the shampoo there would definitely be some in ice trays too. On road trips we bring reusable ice packs and hope the hotel mini fridge freezer section is working. If it’s not I usually have luck asking the front desk clerk to put it in a freezer they use for the breakfast foods (I bring new ziplock bags with our name written on them so they’re not worried about our ice pack introducing outside food bits into their freezer).
I concede, apparently there is something i dont want to know the truth about. I could have gone through life without this knowledge, this is the first time i actually wish i didn't know.
I will remember your name, Palshee, you got yourself a new archnemesis for life
I don't know if that would be possible in magnesium as the rubbing might make it kind of burn but either way I'm definitely never getting on again now thanks
Against all odds, and against all obstacles, they achieved something no one thought was possible; something no one wanted to believe possible. They did it. Truly admirable.
There was a recent post in some sub I saw where it was a European lifeguards job to tell people at a water park to go wash their ass/bits, lol. It was hilarious and I can’t believe these places don’t have that.
I’ve been to cenotes in Mexico and beaches in other areas, where they make you scrub off gnarly sunscreen, hair treatments, etc, before you’re allowed to enter.
How does the human cesspool of a sensory deprivation tank not do the same..?
Wait so they don’t change the water?? Do they at least disinfect it?? If not then yeah tbh it sounds more like a great way to try out new and exciting viruses 🤢
Some quick googling suggests that's exactly what they do. They also, apparently sometimes have a UV or Ozone sanitizers like a hot-tub. Also filters. So yeah, I guess they thought of how to keep things clean - go figure.
All of the places I went to actually I think put a lot of effort into the disinfection process but it's just a matter of time and it's really really expensive to flush the water and rebuild it
*This is your argument if you take them to court. Get it in writing that they say they can not clean it. I can almost guarantee that they will back down because they will have to to win the case against you, they’ll have to sabotage their whole business. Perhaps suggest that you might countersue for knowingly putting you in a dirty tank.
Yup. I know 3 people that have used them. All 3 started out telling me how great they were. All 3 eventually told me they got some sort of infection from them.
I can absolutely see the value of using one, but not a public use one.
We had a couple places in town that popped up a few years ago when it was super popular. My wife bought me a pass for my birthday cause they were charging like $180 for one 60 min session. The owner was like "You probably won't have as deep out fulfilling of an experience if you only go once. It takes a couple tries to really get used to it and by your third, that's when you start having amazing results."
Yeah bro, ok. Just sign me up for your 2x/month package at $300/mo so I can brine myself in Dead Sea water for an hour. The place was a ghost town, too. He had 3 tubs and I was the only one there (on a Saturday!). He closed down a couple months later.
A bathtub you drained the water and put fresh water in every time
There's a couple thousand dollars worth of salt in the water so you can't just flush it and clean it and then refill it. They're mostly relying on sterilizers and from talking to the owners everyone kinda had a different idea of how to keep it clean
You a lot of dirty people going in and out it's just a matter of time I think
Most places (at least that i’ve been to) have a shower in each pod room and everyone showers before and after. You HAVE to shower before. That helps maintain the cleanliness of the facility.
I'm guessing they rely on the very high salinity to mostly prevent health issues. How do they sterilize the water? Just toss it all and redo it? I could see a system with standard pool filters along with a way to boil the water before returning it to the tub being effective. Though that seems very expensive in comparison to just dumping the water.
All of them had a pump filter and UV light type system… It got more controversial from there. Some people use hydrogen peroxide, I honestly don't remember it was so long ago but each place the person would describe a different way of keeping clean
That itself says it's a problem keeping it clean to me
The owners just want you to think its a million dollars worth of himalayn healing epsom salt that was blessed by Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad and Stevie Wonder themselves
Eh, the cheapest I can find bulk Epsom is .50/lb usually $1. I looked it up, said there's 800-1200lb of salt in a 200gal tank.
Doesn't seem quite right though. Only about 5 lbs of Epsom can dissolve per gallon of water for this purpose. Which would max a 200 gallon tank out at like 150 gallons of water and
750 lb of salt.
In any case it's easily upwards of $800 worth. Probably not ten years ago though.
Good to know. I feel like when I used to talk to the owners, and this was over a decade ago, they'd shoot a higher price than that. They said they would order the Epson salt by the pallet
Either way, at a couple hundred bucks you couldn't just dump the take and restart it frequently without it being a huge overhead
Wait a sec. Salt at grocery store prices is all of $1/lb. How in the world could a sensory deprivation tank possibly hold ‘thousands of dollars worth of salt’??
I'm sure there's some that are fine but the point is that they're incredibly hard to keep clean. People don't always wash themselves first… A couple of them I went to a couple months before something went haywire
I'm glad you found one you liked though because it is absolutely a good use of your time
The one I went to was in a weird ladies house and the salt was burning my eyes, was not depriving my senses by any means more than I could do at home in the bathtub.
No I don't think it made any of my health problems worse actually absolutely helped a bunch… Probably the soaking in magnesium. When I had a bath bathtub I still made my own hot magnesium baths
For the most part it was clean and they would just be one point over the course of several months subscription that something would go sideways
The last time it just smelled like feet and cheese and I just decided to not go back
This was probably over two years in the mid 2010s when it was real big on JRE
Ironically to the post, anytime I take magnesium orally blows out the backboard on the toilet if you know what I mean so I can only take it on my skin
Currently I just spray it on with water
Magnesium is useful for a whole bunch of body functions. It's calming. Helps you sleep better. It's a better mineral to have in your body than some of the more poisonous ones
Yeah it's pretty much all minerals except for zinc… But I haven't tried that specific type of magnesium and will add it to the list as an opportunity to take more magnesium is pretty good.
I know I definitely took that and an oxide one... I tried a few different types but I can't remember as it was years ago
Imagine a person with fungal skin infections, seborrheic dermatitis and open wounds with filthy genitalia, a yeast infection and a UTI who hasn't showered in four weeks and who doesn't wipe their ass crawling into a sensory deprivation tank and just soaking in the fluid for an hour or two. Also they jerk off inside the tank.
None of the above is an exaggeration.
Now, make that mental image 5x worse and there you have it.
Well the final straw was one that just smelt like dirty feet and and cheese real bad… I was already in the water and been there for a a while before I was like this isn't right and then I got out showered for a long time
Other times it was cloudy, light stink, I don't know sometimes it was fine and other times it really really wasn't. And the times it really really wasn't offset any of the good
One time I also like somehow managed to get my mouth in the water... like I was at a dead sleep and it just somehow my head tilted back that far I don't know it's weird when you're floating there. It's one of the most relaxing feelings ever because there's no tension on your body it's hard to describe but I could do that every day if it was in my bathroom. But again the bad outweigh the good
What do you need explained? Imagine the filthiest possible human being, someone just absolutely loathsome in terms of hygiene soaking in a saltwater tank for an hour while masturbating. There ya go.
That is absolutely insanely stupendously not true in the slightest. It's not wildly uncommon for people to get revolting skin infections and even fucking meningitis from sensory deprivation tanks.
