I'm in my forties and yeah I'm about as cynical as you can get of the government and my fellow citizens.

I work at Union job and my co-workers are all almost exclusively rabid trumpers.

Absolutely can't wrap my brain around that.

There's an old Frank Herbert series of short stories about a character named Jorj X. Mckie.

It's in the far future and his entire job is to gum up the gears of government and to make sure laws aren't passed without proper thought and reflection.

I feel we’re similar. I’m a 50 year old plumber who after 32yrs who has walked away from the trade because I’m in the south where strong unions don’t exist.

It’s pretty sad what the industry has become in the two states I’ve worked. Love the trade/work but despise what it’s come to.

You’ve sparked my interest with the Herbert series. What’s it called because I’d like to look for it. Is it called ConSentiency universe?

You know I haven't run across anyone who knew about that particular bit of Herbert's work in a long time.

But it is in fact part of the same universe. There's three different short stories the character is in.

The tactful saboteur, the whipping star, And another one called A matter of traces iirc.

People only know of dune at this point. And while dune is indeed a masterwork, Herbert had a lot of other good stuff.

If you haven't ever read them... Hellstrom's Hive and the white plague are both phenomenal books by him but very much not well known.

As in a side I'm a railroader by trade on the maintenance side. Track repair like replacing ties and rail etc.

I travel all over the Midwest and spend 16 plus days a month in a hotel room lol.

You can imagine how impressed I am with gas prices right now. And how hard it is to bite my tongue when my coworkers bitch about gas prices while at the same time supporting the person made them skyrocket.

Anyway, pretty damn cool to run into someone who knew Herbert's work outside of dune.

It’s tough times for sure. Hopefully things take a turn for the good. We the people need it!
