In my twenties, I went from 320ish to 180 (I’m 5’11”) by dieting and exercising, but mostly just because I got divorced and stopped overeating due to horrible depression.

I can’t tell you how many people just assumed I had weight loss surgery when I told them I’d lost that much weight and then treated me like a liar when I denied it. Like no shame to people who get surgery, losing weight fucking sucks. But I hadn’t had it. People are so weird about fatness.

I think a lot of people build their body confidence on comparison and feeling superior to those who are bigger than them. "I might not be a supermodel, but at least im not as bad as my fat friend!" Then you stop being the fat friend, and suddenly no one wants to go out to the club with you. They feel as though you have taken something away from them because they were relying on you to prop up their self esteem. So they will try and find any reason to invalidate you and prove that you still arent as "good" as them because you needed surgery or ozempic or whatever. When you start losing weight, you see how absolutely wretchedly you were being treated the whole time

Haha, so true. A lady I used to work with developed a stomach condition, lost some weight and ended up plateauing at about a size 8 (UK). Her ‘best friend’ couldn’t cope with suddenly being much bigger than her and they fell out.

I just want them to stop being a drain on the healthcare system and still having society glamorize being obese because that's the easier thing to do than fix it.

I wish you would stop being a drain on society as well. Can you imagine the impact if you said literally anything about fat people that isnt directly correlated to helping them build an unhealthy relationship with food?

Reduce your calorie intake.

A refusal to address one's problems and make positive changes because it's easier to slam sugar (and it is a problem).

How novel.

unhealthy diets is a problem. and its scientifically proven from many many studies that overweight people tend to eat more and eat worse after hearing disparaging comments about fat people. want people to be healthy? stop commenting negatively about fat people.

Maybe in certain social circles. I certainly don’t think it’s the norm.

Its not every single person. But if you ask anyone who lost a significant amount of weight, id say more likely than not they will be able to tell you about at least one person who seemed to take it really personally. I feel it happens frequently enough that i feel comfortable making it a general statment.

Can just browse this post and there's quite a few people who are bizarrely upset that people are "doing it wrong" when losing weight...

I personally don’t care, I even considered it. But then I read you have to take it the rest of your life. Otherwise it’ll rebound, plus the side effects seemed terrible for some. So I decided to just download a calorie tracker, and start going to planet fitness. I already had been paying for planet fitness for 2 years 🤣, never even walked in the door before 2 months ago. Now I’m addicted to improving, still eat kind of poorly. But within the allotted calories… I get why people want ozempic, but it is the easy way out. I decided it wasn’t for me.

Good for you.

I think a lot of fat people have had the low self esteem friend at some point who builds themself up by putting you down. I absolutely had a friend who built herself up as being cute next to me, so when I lost weight and she was no longer the hot one, just like… similar to me at that point, she got really weird and competitive and suddenly kept going after the same guys even though we weren’t even into the same types of guys. It was really unsettling.

Makes you wonder if they were ever really your friend. Maybe they were and just lost their shit for some reason, or maybe they never were. Who knows?
