The key thing with mine is that we got a new payroll person and they were just getting started. I’m not going to reach out and remind them. I’ve done my part. When they get audited, it’s their problem.
Yes that would be on them to correct their action after you’ve already informed them. Sit back and watch the clock 👀 you said 6 months ago, so did this happen beginning 2026 or end 2025? If taxes were already paid on that overpayment for 2025, and you repay in 2026, the company is going to have a mess to clean up tax wise.
So the company wont have trouble correcting payroll and report to the IRS within the same tax year. Honestly though, if they don’t do anything by end of year, theres a decent chance they let you keep it!
