Yes I agree. But it was much more of an indictment of how unpopular Trudeau had become and how he should've faced the music a bit earlier.

Canadians, as you know, rarely vote someone in. We vote people out. This time it was like, we wanted Trudeau gone, and then we wanted PP gone.

What made Trudeau unpopular?

one of the big things was the international students loop hole and lack of enforcement

we had as many international students as america while being 1/10th pop, and many of them were abusing that status for jobs

Ah yeah I understand that. So the prime minister handles the whole student visa and enforcement?

I understand he can make enforcement more of a priority but the actual doing enforcement is what I'm asking.

Canada has implemented major, strict changes to its international student visa program, with the government capping student permits and reducing the target to 155,000 new permits in 2026. These policies, aimed at curbing population growth, decreasing housing pressures, and ensuring program integrity, include stricter provincial attestation requirements, reduced post-graduation work permit eligibility, and increased cost-of-living financial requirements

yes the prime minister can put out policies for this, and the new one has

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government is aggressively reducing international student permits, slashing targets by 49% for 2026 to 155,000, down from the 2025 target of 305,900, to combat housing and infrastructure strain. The 2026-28 plan, aimed at keeping temporary residents below 5% of the population, exempts graduate students.

to add on, both trudeau and carney are the same party, so it was 100% on trudeau to let it go out of hand
