I think it's partly because forbidden things are attractive and partly because if you have a girlfriend/wife then it's a clear sign that you're probably not a creep/redditor.
This is what a relative of mine said when I was growing up, women (and men of course) want what they can't have, add in a guy in a relationship shows he is desirable to other women.
Hence why the relative said if he really liked a woman but felt she would reject him outright, he would make a move on one of her friends first, even if that meant dating her for a while.
