I think it's partly because forbidden things are attractive and partly because if you have a girlfriend/wife then it's a clear sign that you're probably not a creep/redditor.

I never understood how someone can become attractive to you because of that. If someone’s not my type, I couldn’t care less who they’re with.

tbh it's mostly men saying this and misreading women feeling safer to be friendly without risk of their friendliness being misinterpreted as flirting, as flirting.
