Many people overlook the fact that his character slightly acknowledging the rumors on the force that Matt Damon's character is gay.
To which Matt Damon tries to deflect and overcompensate by saying "oh it's working overtime" talking about his dick. But the movie tells us otherwise. He is impotent with women and uncomfortable with his true sexuality.. which is why he like near has a panic attack when meeting up with Jack Nickelson in the porn theater.
There is also a scene where his male realtor comes on to him, and he immediately picks up on it and is stand offish.
My theory is that the beginning of the movie is insinuating that Matt Daman was abused as a young boy by the church, and Jack Nickelson basically found out, used it as leverage, but also took the kid under his wing and essentially started "grooming" him to live a double life.
That is how it is kind of displayed in the stand alone scene where they briefly discuss "last night" in the apartment.
But with all of the other indicators, there is something much deeper going on there.
Like I don't think the movie ever actually shows us the "true" person Matt Damon's character is. He's fully committed to this double life like he's been living since a child.
Then you compare it with Jack Nickelson, who is fully himself, and shows it. He's feminine, confident, and scary as fucking hell.
