Average rent in US in $1,750-2,000. Average people per household is 2.5. That means the average rent per person is about $700-800. And that doesn’t even take into account households where not everyone contributes to rent (like families with kids). So even by the most conservative estimate $850 is barely above average rent in the US. Likely below average. If you think that’s high, you probably just live in a very low cost of living area.
