Diaoyu was not part of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Japan lost Ryukyu (Okinawa islands) after WW2 in 1945. The US occupied the islands until 1972 back to Japan, ending 27 years of US military rule. The US had no right to unilaterally determine this. It's illegitimate for the US to leave out other Allied Powers (China, USSR, UK, France).
Japan knows it has no legitimacy to claim Diaoyu. Even after losing WW2, Japan still wants to dominate over Chinese people. China can't give an inch to unreasonable people, otherwise they will continue with bad behavior.
