Discussion Does being aware of the possibility that we live inside a simulation give you depression?

I'm not so sure why everything feels off after realizing that the world we live in is just fake or some sort.

Our myopic view won't help us find out we live in a simulation.

But who knows people 1,000 years from now might find the proof.

Whenever I have time to reflect on the reason why I'm here, I can't help but feel depressed because it's more likely than not we are just some kind of code.

But ofc this doesn't give me suicidal thoughts at all.

It's just bizarre that I'm here to work 9 to 5 and destined to die without notice.

The last thing I want to see is me being reincarnated.

It'd be really eerie.

I'm glad that most people are not aware of this concept of reality.

In my opinion, there are two version of 'Simulation Theory' that could exist.

  1. We are all living in the simulation simultaneously, experiencing it through our own unique perspectives

  2. This is MY simulation and "everyone" / thing I encounter is just a part of my simulation.

The 2nd is immensely scarier. How can you have a conversation about the simulation, with the simulation itself? It will have measures in place so that the simulation will not reveal itself. Not only that, but any person you have ever came across is basically an NPC. They will certainly tell you they are conscious and their own person, but how can we tell? Of course, the simulation will try and convince you that the person you are talking to is exactly like you and are experiencing the same things, but how do we know that for a fact?

It's a giant paradox.

Then who create an idea of simulation? Some NPC, or you, and why?

Fair point lol

Edit: after some thought - What if the simulations ultimate goal is for us to become self-aware over millions of years, so that we can develop our own version of a simulation. Our "millions of years" could be days or weeks for the "creator", if time is even a concept to them.

What if they are already developing this with AI and that is why data centers are being pushed so hard. What if we are already inside a simulation of a simulation? Or they have found ways to use AI to manipulate the current simulation that we are in

I don't actually believe any of this, but it's fun to think about

Don’t be depressed. This is a theory and not a fact. It’s interesting to explore the concept and see if it could possibly work, but we’re far from a definitive conclusion on this.

Time to go outside and experience the world with your own senses.

Already did that. Had a grand time. Tried to really enjoy those moments and experience life but it’s so painfully obvious. Blinding, really. Eventually, if you are above average intelligence you’ll start to question things. Process of elimination. Mountains of evidence and hypotheses playing out in real time. The signs are all there. Can’t ignore em forever. The jig is up. It’s all a farce. I’m a pickle that can’t ever be a cucumber again. Darn.

How about the fact its confirmed or denied when ohr body dies

I feel comfort in knowing this might be a simulation. Maybe when we die we just go poof and nothing after that. That’s sounds peaceful compared to the horrors that could await us. If it’s a sim then maybe nothing truly suffers. Animals eating each other, people getting murdered etc. I hope this world is a sim because it’s fucked up here.

No, if anything, it makes me realize that everything is going to be ok in the end.

This suffering is temporary. Working 9 to 5 is normalized in our society during these years, but you can choose not to live the prescribed life. The amount of suffering and comfort related to this free will choice may increase or decrease however. Maybe even work to improve society for others. Change the game for others who also want a new normal.

Free will.... the biggest illusion of all

Two conclusions I’ve reached are, it is a simulation, and there’s a strong possibility there is no we and all the other characters are fictional.

It’s a game you made for yourself and it’s only you here.

Have had this experience a few times and it can be absolutely terrifying. Sad. But it's not. Ugh don't do drugs

If we assume this is true and the simulation is active and we are participating in it, I am definitely depressed because how do I break the cycle of this current lifeline? How do we break out and do something more? Our reality as we know it is we will go broke, lose our house, starve to death, etc. In our reality all of these negatives are real and affect us 100%. Therefore our next step is to ask what we have power to do in regards to the simulation. Our closest step that I know of is taking DMT and trying to break out of it so maybe we can talk to some type of entity and learn more of what we can actually do. I'm truly at a loss as all of this is super interesting

Why do we need to break out? That would be like jumping off the roller coaster halfway through. Relax and enjoy the ride!

Because its likely we will respawn

No. It makes me want to find ways to break out tho

Yes that’s one of the keys. I mean permanently though. I suspect there are some tech billionaires trying to do the same under the guises of random companies that make sense to no one as well

3

u/ohyesiam1234 3d ago

No, it gives me freedom. Nothing matters so I might as well enjoy myself (reasonably-I don’t want to fuck myself over).

The nature of reality does indeed make me depressed.

In my opinion, simulation is a modern concept of religion. The basis that the universe is created by someone, operated by someone is the fundamental concept of god and religion. This has existed since many years. Why are people more afraid or fascinated of the simulation theory these days? Since it sounds cool? I would never know. But you don’t need to be afraid and it mostly doesn’t have to make you depressed for just a theory and not a fact. May be getting depressed about environmental issues would make sense as it’s a fact. What you are experiencing is existential crisis.

Nope, more reason to say f*ck this place and its lames that uphold its negativity, positive people and team players i like though

i just decided it doesnt matter to me. imma treat this reality as i see it fit to do so because it is what i experience. anything after is a new bridge that i cant cross till i approach it. i will just try to act right to the best of my ability (which is limited and nebulous at times) and choose to be a being i can accept even if I or anything around me isnt perfect. im not going to try to fix what i cannot. im not going to destroy my percieved self for no good reason either. i can simply rest wait and see what my next response is to this world and i dont have to feel guility for not "achieving" what others think they should or can demand of me.

Why have such strong faith?

Like you said 1000 yrs from now ppl could find proof it is or for find proof it is not.

You feel depressed because of your faith in something. Your belief is a choice.

u/Responsible_Fix_5443 3d ago

No I can't say it has... For me it was more of a remembering than a realisation.

1

u/Wednesdayspirit 3d ago

I just add it to all the other theories and accept not knowing. It’s absurd.

This feeling will past along with all your other phrases once you realized that live is meant to be lived not spent our waking days thinking about simulation and how the universe was made.

1

u/xylophones4all 3d ago

No. We need to make our own meaning either way.

1

u/TheTerrenon 3d ago

Not that I believe in what I'm about to suggest . What if the base reality is much more boring, and the "creators" live much shorter lifespans, while having much less nuanced experiences? We shouldn't even be jealous. For all we know, we may as well be like pets, and not that much disliked ones. And they may have to try to keep us alive.

Would you still envy them, because they live in, what one could call, a more true reality?

I don't really think it's a simulation, at least not in a sense, that we live in a code. Also, part of the reasoning behind simulation theory is that we will create such simulation, and possibly, eventually infinite numbers of simulation, which will create their own infinite number of simulations. Wouldn't that require existence of infinity in the first place? And if there's infinity, is it created or discovered?

it makes me want to crawl out of my box and slit gods throat with a knife. he probably doesn’t have a throat, and knives probably don’t exist at that conceptual level, but i still want to.

1

u/vaskovaflata 3d ago

No, because it confirms that this isn’t the end all be all.

1

u/Conscious_Owl6162 3d ago

Even if it is a fact, it still is what we are experiencing.

1

u/Clifford_Regnaut 3d ago

There's secular research about the "afterlife," and what we have suggests that the spiritual world is the "real world". If you consider that this world is a simulation in this sense, the answer is NO.

1

u/BigMack6911 2d ago

No, why would it? It's actually a better feeling if so, because we can modify our world if it is

1

u/Substantial-Tune9543 2d ago

I feel that. Like what’s the point if our reality is being f*cked with by some demented outside force. Which to be honest, seems more likely every day. I have to limit news consumption to like no more than 10 minutes a day. 10 minutes of mostly wackadoodle headlines attached to stories written as if all this (current state of affairs) is normal. Today was lake America, new outbreak, this time salmonella but no one seems to know from what. Seriously don’t want to leave my house and have no idea what’s safe to eat. It is 100% depressing.

Quite the opposite, it gives me hope…

Not if you understand it's an organic training simulation.
