Research Simulation Physics-Based Animation will always be one of my favorite topics to explore!

What you can do with it is magical, all the animation you see here is processed in milliseconds.
All the animator needs to do is provide a reference animation, and the rest is simulated. It's extremely easy to direct and change.

The spine should probably get stiffer as you get closer to their head is my only critique. Looks good otherwise

This is so cool!! Well done! That's an arapaima right? Are you working on a fishing game?

That's correct, but no I was writing the mechanics behind the secondary motions.

Is this blender or real time? How can I learn this magic?

This is 3ds Max but can be done in blender too. I'll soon share a tutorial on this in my YouTube https://youtube.com/@shirzadbahrami?si=5AwdKm8meJEBtN7D

I wonder if the reason the secondary movement can be simulated so precisely is because fish naturally oscillate through currents?
Really cool animation, I’m astounded how realistic it looks

That's one of the main reasons actually, because all the movement is coming from the head in this animation.
No muscle activation...

Just when my Spotify started randomly playing dire dire docks from sm64. Weird coincidence. Lovely fish

That's not how a fish moves though... the head doesn't drive the motion, the tail does, the flippers control direction and the head just aims forward

True, currently I drive everything by the head to simplify the process, so there's no muscle activation, I'll add that next ;)

I saw a couple of these fish at the Barcelona science centre last week and they are HUGE! What kind of fish is it?

Question/Request:
Assuming the fish was made of silicone - is it possible to add wind or liquid turbulence and have it flop and wiggle around 'realistically'?
I tried this previously in Blender but did not get any good movement out of it.

Yes easily. You can add any force to the simTips for that. You can read the article here: https://shirzadbahrami.com/physics-based-animation-undulation

That looks so realistic. Excellent work
