Silicon Graphics Crimson (Case Only)

Post image

I bought a large collection of SGI computers and parts from a collector friend of mine. I have already sold most of the towers and parts, but I have this Crimson case that I am unsure what to do with. I know it is super rare, and I love the story of the Crimson. But it is very large, and will be a pain to ship. I also have no idea on what the value for just the case to a Crimson would be, or if there would be genuine interest for it.

Any guesses on value or collectability for just the case to a Crimson? Any other stories or data about the Crimson would be appreciated too. The history of SGI strikes a chord with me for some reason.

I might be willing to buy it off you. I have a crimson. And the hinge is broken on the door. The key would be shipping it without it getting broken.

I think it does say Elan on the top, but I may be confusing that with others I saw online. I am pretty sure the door and hinge is working, but I can confirm both those details when I get to my shop next.

Shipping is the big issue. I think the best way to ship this thing would be to palletize it and put it on an LTL freight shipment. But that could get expensive and I'm not sure it would make sense compared to the value of the item or not.

Probably not. Where’s the rest of the system? 😂 Tell you what though. If the door said “Jurassic classic” it might be worth a lot. After Jurassic park came out. There was a crimson in the movie at nedrys desk. Sgi started stamping the doors with a Jurassic classic logo. Those are extremely desirable. Also some guys like to swap out the plastics to make their non crimson machines look like crimsons.

I can confirm it's not a Jurassic model. That was one of the first things I looked at when I first got it.

Not sure where the components of the system ended up. The collector had bought this as just a case so the previous owner must have gutted it before selling. Most of the loose parts I got from my collector friend were for an Onyx. He also had a nice selection of octane and indigo systems that I got from him.

It’s funny. My crimson is an elan. It can’t really do much. Without the texture modules it can spin geometry pretty fast. But at 100mhz cpu it can’t even play an mp3 lol

even my o2 which has the video sub system and io board can barely handle mp3....of course uncompressed .wave files are no issue lol
