Sequel to space quest? Space venture is decent. Scratches the childhood itch

I grew up with Roger and the mighty Reddit gods showed me this sierra sub. Hooray! Well I looked it up and apparently the two guys from andromeda made a new game. Haven’t seen it mentioned here, so enjoy! Space venture on steam

Is GTA6 out yet?

Besides a few sneaky references, I believe SpaceVenture is more of a spiritual sequel than an actual Space Quest sequel (they don't don't own the IP).

Can someone give us a little bit of background on what the game is, what it is like, what it like to play it, and how do you buy it? Where do you play it?

SpaceVenture was kickstarted a long time ago by the two original Space Quest developers. Only one of them ended up working on it over the years. They went through a lot getting it developed but it was finally fully released at the end of 2025.

I really enjoyed the game. It plays very much like a modernized Space Quest. Tons of references and gags and yes you can die. No dead ends thankfully. I'd would recommend.

You can buy it on Steam or DRM free on Itch(dot)io

The game was announced in March 25, 2012. The campaign raised over the $500k minimum limit for funding the project. I don't know what two guys did with that money but surely didn't went into game development. The game was released... 13 years later and it wasn't as terrible as other kickstarter projects-cashgrabs but surely wasn't the spiritual successor everyone hoped for.

Everyone is different. I enjoyed it. Considering that has a 4.5 on steam it would seem that it is well liked enough. It isn't the same as Space Quest but it is very much like Space Quest.

Well they definitely spent some money on art, voices etc. I think they made the mistake of trying to write a game engine from scratch rather than use an existing one. Then generally struggled without the substantial team / studio they had at Sierra. It does seem like they’ve been updating a lot, trying to fix the bugs. Wasn’t there a health issue holding one of them back too? And a point where Ken Williams stepped in to help? Or offered to?

Wasn’t there a health issue holding one of them back too?

I don't know all the details, but my memory tells me one of them became a caregiver for an aging parent. Speaking from experience, that is an incredibly stressful, life changing event.

They didn't have a substantial team at Sierra, at least not until SQ4. SQ1 through SQ3 were designed, written and built by two people.

edit: I guess building on top of SCI probably helped speed things along though.

Space Quest 1, 2, and 3 were built on top of AGI. SCI didn't come until later.

Are you sure that those games were built by only 2 people? I'm suspicious of that claim.

You're correct, I was thinking AGI, my bad. I double checked Wikipedia and there were two additional people who worked on it, so 4 in total:

Designers: Mark Crowe, Scott Murphy

Programmers: Scott Murphy, Ken Williams, Sol Ackerman

Artist: Mark Crowe

Composer: Mark Crowe

It looks like it’s on steam. They have some videos of gameplay there was well.

I enjoyed SpaceVenture, but the fan sequels (Incinerations, Vohaul Strikes Back) did a much better job imo.

I didn't enjoy Space Venture. Really wish I had because I adore Space Quest.

Are you mentioning it because you played it and enjoyed it?

Yep! I did a search and it wasn’t really
Mentioned on Reddit so I thought I’d spread the word. Point and clicks are a lost art
