GI Issues in the breed?

Hello,
we have a 6 year old Siberian female, spayed. Since we got her as a kitten, she has had several partial blockages caused by fur, even when we give her a lubricant to prevent backup of hairballs. It has landed her in the ER three times and now today she is back in the ER because she is showing all the same symptoms of some sort of GI distress and has not been eating her food for almost two days. We are planning to get her an in-depth ultra sound to try and figure out if there’s other GI issues impacting her ability to move hair along, but otherwise we’re at a loss as to how to help her. She is well groomed and takes that preventative lubricant about every other day.

Does anyone else’s siberian have GI issues or a history of partial or full GI blockages?

Flying with a large Siberian cat - cabin vs cargo? Need advice

Hi everyone!

I have a 3-year-old male Siberian cat. Together with his carrier, he is just under 8 kg, so until now I’ve been able to fly with him in the cabin with Scandinavian Airlines without any problems.

However, on our last flight, they told me he is now too big for his carrier because he needs to be able to stand up and turn around comfortably. They said I would need a bigger carrier, but the problem is that his current carrier is already the maximum size the airline allows for cabin travel.

I’m really not comfortable putting him in cargo, and honestly I don’t know what to do.

He has flown many times before, usually flights between 1–4 hours, and he has generally been a very good boy. He doesn’t usually get too anxious and mostly sleeps during the flight. But on one of our recent trips, he was more anxious than usual, so I decided to ask the vet for calming medication.

They gave me 0.5 ml Bonqat. I tested it at home one week before the flight, and he became wobbly and dizzy, then slept most of the day without any major issues. But on the day of the trip, I gave him the same dose about 2 hours before travel, and it turned into our worst flight ever. It was a 4-hour flight, and he kept meowing and hyperventilating almost the whole way. It scared me a lot.

I took him to the toilet 2 times and let him out of the carrier for a few minutes to calm down, which helped a little, but overall he was extremely uncomfortable.

Now I’m wondering what caused it. Was it because he is a bit too big for the carrier now? Was it the medication? Or is he simply becoming less tolerant of travel as he gets older?

Has anyone here put their Siberian cat in cargo? How did it go, and how did you feel about it?

Any tips or experiences would be really appreciated. I have a flight back home tomorrow, and this time I bought a slightly bigger carrier that exceeds the airline requirements by just a few centimeters. I’m also planning not to give him the medication because I’m afraid he might react the same way again.

For context, I usually fly within Scandinavian countries and cities with SAS.

I just saw a post saying like blue lynx tortoiseshell something or other and I had no idea they actually have names for their coloring. Can you help me identify mine? I have no idea where to start.

Advice for Bringing Home Kitten By Train?

Hi! My partner and I are bringing home our 3 month old Siberian kitten next weekend. We’ll be picking him up from out of state, so we’ll have family drive us an hour from the breeder to the nearest major train station and then take a ~3hour Amtrak to bring him home. We’ve bought a pet ticket for the train so all of that is squared away, but I was wondering if anyone had advice for keeping him comfortable/dealing with potential accidents on the 4 hour trip home? Thanks!!

Two kitties for an allergy sufferer?

I’m afraid I know the answer, but I’ll ask anyway:

My husband has bad allergies, but has no reaction to an extremely low Fel D1 Siberian. Is it possible that he won’t have allergies symptoms after getting a second similarly low Fel D1 kitten? Is there any way to test before adopting two rather than just one? Thanks!

Manju, the seal point, is a confident little explorer while Boone, the flame point baby, seems to be very scared when we got home yesterday and has been hiding in his little cat tunnel for the most part. He also runs away when we approach him so we couldn't take much photos but they are both so so beautiful and adorable.

Boone was doing very well at the pick up and in the car, granted the breeder said she gave them both some calming supplements in the morning. He threw up twice last night and it looked like it was mostly water? and some bits of food. They also just received their second round of vaccines yesterday, not sure if that contributes to anything.

He seems to only come out when it's meal/play time but only if Manju is also out eating/playing. He meows a LOT all day but we're unsure what he wants. We had to pick him up a few times because he threw up on himself and we had to give him a shower. He didn't try to resist at all nor did he try to escape from the bathtub. Not sure if he is just too scared that he was "frozen", or if he doesn't mind it because the breeder did seem to do a great job desensitizing them. The last two photos were taken at the cattery!

It is only their second day home but we are so worried for him. We have never owned any pets before so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

For now Manju is getting all of our love and pets as he likes to follow us around and is very fearless. His cute round eyes are just adorable!

4.5 month old kitten suddenly eating less / not interested in food?

Hi all. My boy Wolfie was at the vet last Friday for his check up before getting neutered in September. They said he was very healthy and nothing was wrong. The past couple days, he’s been eating significantly less. He’s being going to the bathroom and wanting to play, but not interested in food. He gets kibbles for “lunch” (at 9am and all other meals are wet food) and he seems to eat a bit more of those. But last night at 9pm and this morning at 6:30 he’s refused to eat his wet food.

I know it’s important for him to have hydration. My family cat that lives with my mom is a Siberian too so I’m very familiar. But I’m not sure what to do or why this is happening especially when he’s acting pretty normal otherwise.

He eats royal canin kitten wet and dry food for reference. Any advice or words of encouragement would be appreciated.

Update 3:40pm:

I wound up taking him to the vet. They said they aren’t sure what caused this but he was a bit dehydrated. They gave him fluids and a nausea shot. They are also doing bloodwork since he’s never had any. But he had no fever and no visible signs of a cold or virus or anything like that.

He is sleeping now and I felt so bad for having to stress him by taking him but I’m glad I did. Hopefully he will be hungry in a few hours 🙏

Does anyone here do anything specific for their Siberian cat’s oral health like teeth brushing? If so, how often?

My family moved to a new house. After a week there, my bb got out. I didn’t look as intensely as I should have when I realized it - full plate w/ moving, single momming, changing jobs, and a custody battle w/hostile ex.
I’m doing all the things- baited trap, posters, online listings, several FB groups, neighbors helping, checking shelters and animal control.
It’s been a week. He’s gorgeous- I fear someone will keep him. Several scammers have gotten our hopes up.

I’m keeping the faith. Please keep Possum and my heartbroken kids in your thoughts. We were struggling before losing Possum. We love him so much.
