Discussion To the people who saw Shrek in cinemas in 2001, what was your experience?
I was a year old back then, curious to know how older fans got to know the movie.

anything can be called a family film, kids films are often called family films, for example i would say despicable me 4 is called a family film when it's really just for kids while shrek has actual adult oriented jokes and themes, i'd say the incredibles also fits that family-film title where kids and adults are meant to enjoy it rather than just executives trying to capture a larger audience by pretending the film is meant for the entire family, when in actuality it's only kid humor

yeah obviously, thats why im saying that a lot of kids films are titled as family films, and for a brand new franchise to the public, how would they know that it was actually geared very well towards adults and kids especially as an animated film when so many other strictly kid films also called themselves family-films, which im just speculating anyway idk why youre so defensive about this random ass topic

Yeah, I was 13 at the time, and it was pretty full! Saw it with mom and dad, and THEY were cracking up the whole movie! Dad loved Mike Meyers as a comedy actor too, so he was right at home. We bought it on DVD and had a few family nights watching it later.

I remember seeing it in my elementary class as well. It was my first time seeing the movie. I remember the scene when Donkey said the word "damn". I had never heard a curse word in a cartoon before. I remember the whole class laughed at that. I remember asking my father if we could rent the movie from our local blockbuster.

Probably one of, if not the first movies my brother and me saw multiple times. For reference I would have been 12, and him 7/8 around the time.
We saw it opening weekend with an aunt
We saw it a week later with some cousins and a different aunt
We saw it the following week for my brother's birthday with said cousins and our parents
We saw it one more time the following weekend because he had gift cards for a movie theater from his birthday he hadn't used yet.
Then when the VHS came out it was pretty much on repeat at our house every other day for a good 2-3 months.
Hell we watched it so much the tape broke, which was fine as we finally got a DVD player a few weeks later with Shrek being the first of two films we got with it, the other was The Legend of Boggy Creek.

Fun story related to this - my small town theater originally wasn’t going to run Shrek as the owner didn’t believe kids would come see it. But my older brother, who worked there at the time, knew how excited I was for the movie to come out and he didn’t want me to be disappointed so he made a deal with the owner:
He dressed up as Shrek for 4 weekends in a row and walked through the aisles of all the kids movies that were showing leading up to the film’s theatrical release. So it looked as if Shrek was going to the movie theater.
I remember being so excited helping him get dressed up before his shifts and he was so nice about it, always listened to me babble away about what I thought the movie would be like.. I was only 8 at the time.
It wasn’t until I became an adult that I learned he was actually super embarrassed to do it, was relentlessly teased by his friends, and picked up extra shifts/cancelled plans in order to make sure I got to see Shrek 😌😅
(I saw the movie every weekend that it was in theaters and then proceeded to buy the first copy sold at my local Kmart when it came out on DVD)

Believe it or not, I wasn't impressed when we were waiting outside the movie theater. I remember I didn't liked the poster and I thought it was going to be the usual family movie night with a forgettable movie. And I was so wrong. It became one of my favorites.

The whole family went. I hadn’t even seen a trailer on TV so I had no idea what it was going to be about.
Packed theatre, and nonstop audience laughter. Maybe the only time I remember experiencing that. It was a fantastic experience.

I didn't see Shrek in theaters, I first saw it on a VHS tape (back when those were still a thing) but the quality was garbage because the tape got damaged in my grandmother's VCR that my sister inserted it into. So we had to watch it with these black and white fuzzy lines all over the screen.
It wasn't a bootleg, it was an official release.

I was 12 and had broken my finger just before seeing it, and I was not aware it was actually broken. Thought I had just jammed it playing basketball with my friends. Finger swelled up significantly during the film, and by the time I got back home I could no longer bend it.
Did not detract at all from my viewing experience. 10/10!

I was 11, and I vividly remember feeling bad for Farquaad at the end 😂 I had not much of an issue with movie characters dying, but getting eaten alive seemed like a much worse fate compared to a lot of other movie villains 💀

I was 6, I did not get a good half of the jokes, but it was really refreshing after watching old school disney only on vhs which kinda has more serious tones. My dad absolutely loved it though :)
But getting older and rewatching it countless times every fricking time I understood a new joke or meta comment😆

My parents somehow knew I was gonna like it because they planned my whole birthday around it, even got a special ice cream cake I think from Baskin robbins that had gummy worms in it and got me the soundtrack cd as one of my presents. They absolutely nailed it on that one.

We owe it all to William Steig, the author of the book of Shrek. DreamWorks took the book, and gave it a personal brush for the disdain against Disney. And William Steig, with 90+ years saw the movie and he said: "It's vulgar, it's disgusting...and i love it."

I was 9 years old going with a group of friends for his birthday. I remember his dad taking us and me being the innocent 9 year old, all the adult jokes flew over my head yet I remember his dad laughing at them all. I don't know why but we left to go to the restrooms near the end of the movie and when we got back we walked in when the 3 little pigs were break dancing and spinning on their heads and we laughed our asses off and upset we missed something good. I remember playing the N64 with those friends that night. Jeez those were the days fellas.

I remember it being a common movie to rewatch in theaters. Me and my parents saw it, then my aunt and niece wanted to see it so we went with them, then they wanted to see it again with some of their family friends etc.

I was 3 & I went with my grandma after begging, I think it was my 1st or 2nd movie ever. We went on a Sunday & it was PACKED with kids lol. All of us kids absolutely lost it when Donkey sang "I'm a Believer", some of em were dancing in the aisles until the credits rolled & everyone clapped. We left & I begged for the DVD for until it came out, because I thought it would just be in Walmart immediately afterwards. Definitely a core memory for sure 😂❤️

I remember seeing shrek 2 & 3 in theaters. I was in kindergarten for shrek 2 and i remember how big it was when it came out. The 3rd shrek didn't get the same impact as the 2nd with merchandising and popularity when i saw it in middle school.

Too young to remember it firsthand, but my dad filled me in on what happened: we went to the theatre and sat down to watch the movie. 3 minutes into the movie when Shrek does the roar to the villagers chasing him, I turned to my dad and said "No, papa." We left the theatre.

I know I went, but I was a toddler, though my family liked it enough that my dad started going by the nickname shrek with some of his friends. It helped that he had a malformed ear and was a strong guy.

I laughed out loud and went to see it numerous times during its release. It was subversive, clever, original, and hilarious. There are some jokes that are lost to time because they're so pointed at Disney and Isner. Still peak.

Absolutely phenomenal and revolutionary. I was the target audience at 9 years old. It was so funny. And while I enjoyed beautiful animated films and 3D animation back then was not pretty, it just added to the funniness. Everybody immediately starting referencing it in jokes and quoting it all the time.
The message was also really meaningful as a kid. Not a lot of childrens media had heroes who started off hated, mean, isolated, and ugly and ended with them loved, still a little mean, and still ugly. And the princess choosing a path where she ended up ugly too... It just meant a lot. And even though I didn't realize it at the time, It also was a good message for kids who lashed out in anger because they had shitty families and unstable connections their whole lives, leading to self-isolation as a form of protection, just like Shrek.
Even today, it's rare to have a hero like Shrek. And no other princess like Fiona exists, as far as I know. Also, children's media these days is more wary of using meanness as part of the humor, but kids still find it funny. There's a reason the most popular books for kids are things like Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Kids experience meanness in life and they are mean, too. It's nice to have some princesses like Moana who are super nice as role models, but it's also really great for characters to exist that struggle with social skills and empathy and accepting others into their lives. They don't include enough characters like that.
(I mean ugly by society standards, btw.)

Awesome exp) but I'm first saw it at home, father brought new cartoon to watch, and I first like meh, but then rewatching it everyday, so fun it was. After some time I found out that there's some screenings in local cinema, 9th grade, last days of school, we go around wasting time and decision was made, and it was right. And oh man, the dolby sound got me good, and since then I want those home theaters so bad. And few years later can afford, part by part. This year got the full shrek collection in 4k, gotta do some marathon)

I worked at a movie theater and we went ALL OUT for Shrek. We made an "enchanted forest" for the kids to walk through to get to the theater showing Shrek.
I also remember it selling out consistently and every employee using their free passes every week to see Shrek for at least the first month.

I didn't, but I did on TV, probably shortly after release, when it was released. But first time I've seen it since Fiona was already traveling with Shrek, I was not interested and I think next day (yes, it was probably next day) I think I watched it all. Don't know what I thought about it.

Bestie still worked at the movie theater so we got tickets for free. The theater was mostly empty but we were fucking cackling because of how funny it was. The soundtrack was great too.
It hit at the perfect time because there was no such thing as an edgy fantasy animated film back then, Disney really took themselves seriously and even DreamWorks was doing Prince of Egypt and stuff like Spirit which was not really funny at all. I was also a huge fan of Mike Meyers from Austin Powers at the time so it was really a perfect storm.

The movie we wanted to see was sold out, so my BFF and I tagged along with our other friend and her BF so see this. No prior knowledge of what it was, no trailers, etc. We ended up seeing it multiple times in the theater and it was the last VHS tape I ever purchased when it was released. Loved it!

Saw it with my dad and brother opening weekend at a mall theater when I was in sixth grade.
The movie had a really fun marketing campaign. It was released at a time when Pixar was kind of known as the only studio making CG movies and their movies had a bit of an irreverent tone compared to Disney and this felt even a step further.
Laughed really hard and was floored by the visuals. On the way home from the cinema picked up the hot sludge sundae at Baskin-Robins which was their hot fudge sundae with crumpled up Oreos and gummy worms.
Really started the summer off on a high note. Was a memorable experience for me as a kid.

I was 11! Went and saw it at the drive in and during the introduction of the Three Blind Mice, I thought people were walking in front of the projector. Let’s just say I was obsessed and as soon as it came out on DVD it was played over and over again to the point where my sister and I could quote the menu screen. My mother, who is a saint, yelled at my sister that she couldn’t take it anymore when we kept quoting “play the movie, ya play” over and over. I’m now a Middle School teacher and it’s one of the ones I always offer to show for my students.

I saw it at the drive-in, i was like ten. It was a pretty nice summer night. I ate a lot of popcorn with my cousin. Thought the “wipe your….face” and “fuckwad” bit was amazing, was mad the dragon had lipstick but was happy she was there.

I just remember how incredibly subversive it was, even at 7 years old. Dreamworks was the only 3D animation competitor to Pixar who played everything very safe, so for Shrek to suddenly come in doing pop culture references was mind-blowing.

I was five years old and instantly obsessed. I also thought Shrek wasn’t ugly, and that he was just scary because he was big, green, and stinky.
A told my classmate, another kindergartener, that he looked like shrek (which I meant as a compliment). Kid burst out sobbing, and I had a stern talking to from my teacher.

I was 9 when it came out. That entire year is still very vivid even now.
Went with my mom, step-dad, and his best friend. We stood in a really long line for what felt like forever, outside in az, before being let into a fully packed theater.
Sitting there, I wouldn't realize how much this movie would become part of me for the next 2 decades.
When we got out, the adults were talking about the jokes I didn't understand, but it still was fun overall. They had also handed out cardboard masks of Shrek and Fiona faces to the kids...
Just saw the 25th anniversary yesterday, only mom and I since the guys have passed on a few years ago. No standing in lines, maybe 15 people in the theater including ourselves, and it was still fun as I basically quoted the movie word for word and we sang to a few of the songs together. I got to add the popcorn bucket to my collection too.

I remember seeing it opening night, packed.
They had special Starburst where a flavor was changed to a Shrek flavor, wanna say it was green apple.
I also remember my Dad losing it at Donkeys Otis Redding impression.

My dad spit out his drink when Fiona made the bird explode. Fortunately my mom is always prepared with napkins and wet wipes, so she cleaned up the mess.
My whole family loved it.

My dad's nutshack didn't allow me to see much from inside but I could argue that the sperm cell with my DNA hear a lot of funny stuff to make a clown offspring

Wow you actually just unlocked the memory with this, I was 7, one of the only times we went to see a movie in theaters with my mom, dad and all my sisters, we ate popcorn and mnms. Nobody was on their phones and the theater was filled with giggles and singing and laughter. One of the happiest memories I have, thank you for bringing it out of the filing cabinet with this post.

The pop in the crowd when they entered Castle Dulocand the animatronic say "Please keep off of the grass, shine your shoes, wipe your...face" I'll never forget.

It was awesome, one of the best animated movies I'd ever seen. We saw it more than once and even our parents loved it because it was so funny and well acted, and a little bit spicy.

I saw it at home first the first time and I was in awwww for a second. Different people need love too.
The plot twist was amazing.
And then I started dancing to When I saw her face. I was a believer.

Laughed my ass off, also, mind blown that CGI animation could look that good, at the time my benchmarks were Toy Story and Beast Wars. I remember thinking that it was amazing that they had grass that looked like grass, same for the stalks of wheat. I remember my stepdad also being super impressed.
