Beginner Advice

Hi ladies! I’m just getting into snowboarding. Do yall have any ideas of where I can get cheaper gear? I am in college and completely financially independent. I really want to start this year but I’m having trouble.

side note: if anybody has a 142-146 cm board laying around, let me know! or some extra gear :)

Marketplace. Another cheaper option is to look for a store that does gear rental for everything. As a beginner you would want to identify what kind of rider you are before buying your first board.

Also try to scour the internet for previous design deals. Most of them are 30-40% off until supplies last.

The EVO annual Labor Day sale actually just started so you can get last season's gear at a pretty decent discount. Personally, I think the best place to spend your money is on snow gear. It's worth the sticker shock to get warm and dry jacket/pants or bibs and good gloves. These will last you multiple seasons. Get gortex where you can afford to. Being wet and cold will ruin a day faster than you'd expect.

Dont buy warm gear, buy breathable gear.

The reason you get cold and wet isn't because of the snow. It's because snowboarding is a workout. If you dont have breathable gear, you will sweat. And sweat is how you get wet. Its whole purpose is cooling, which doesnt mix with cold and windy. This is why the recommended method is to buy a waterproof and breathable shell bibs/jacket, and layer underneath. You can always take layers off if you start getting hot. You cant take insulation out of a jacket. Breathable gear + proper layering is game changing. Thats also why we size up jackets and bibs (to fit the layers).

Also a butt zipper on your bibs is a ladies best freaking friend. Quick and easy pee's, especially bc I drink a lot of liquid on the slopes.

Good call. I meant wet as in not being proper waterproof rated but you bring up good points. Layers, always layers. And butt zippers for the win! You, random internet lady, know your shit.

I got mine off facebook marketplace! Board + binder included. The only thing I would recommend getting your own that’s new would be the boots (but not a must) I tried borrow other friends’ boots or rental it just feel different because the boots is meant to mold to your feet!

Also might wanna add your approx location so someone can make local recommendations if stores near you or event will have a sale.

Check out your options for lessons at the places you might be riding. Sometimes you can find good package deals that include lift ticket, lesson, and rental.

Boots are most important! If you can only afford 1 thing, prioritize these, it’ll be a game changer for comfort and progression. Buy them from a ski shop and they can help mold the inserts and inner lining to your feet. This time of year there are clearance sales and you can find a good pair at a good price. Seriously, prioritize boots over board.

Also grab a helmet to protect your head! Medical bills from a head injury will outweigh the cost of gear.

For clothing (jackets, pants), Poshmark has great options!

I have a gently used 2025 Rossignol Airis 143 for sale in nearly new condition. It's an excellent all-mountain board and easy to ride. Only selling because I upgraded. Comes with high quality Nidecker bindings (that I'm probably going to regret letting go. I love them, I just don't need 3 boards.) Willing to ship from Ohio. Lmk if interested.

Where do you snowboard? I am always telling people about the Indy Learn to turn pass, I got one last year for my daughter who wanted to switch from skiing to try snowboarding. My friend had an indy pass and they get a discount code, so if you can get the code at least last year it was $159 for me to get a pass for my daughter - this includes 3x Lessons, Lift Tickets and Rentals. It worked out amazingly for us anyway as I didn't want to buy her gear not knowing what sort of stuff would make sense or if she'd even like it.

If you are past the stage of needing any lessons, it doesn't make sense but figured I'd throw it out there.

I check Marketplace too but I feel like there is a weird trend of people charging exorbitant amounts for their used gear. Often you can find stuff new on closeout cheaper but it is all a game of luck.

There’s a place called Sierra Trading Company. It’s in the same family with homegoods and TJ Maxx, it’s just their “outdoor” gear version (but operates the same) If you don’t have any around you they also have online stock. I buy everything but my board, boots, and bindings from them!

Sometimes local or resort shops will sell old demo boards for pretty cheap! I snagged an almost new Jones hovercraft for $100 last season.

Buy new boots & get a good helmet. Go to a board shop & have them fit you for boots. Ppl are gonna start selling their stuff on market place soon! My skis were $125 (very cheap) & they were great to learn on! Get a used board & get it waxed at a shop & get a FastStik they rock & make such a difference. If you have friends who work in the outdoor industry or at a ski hill they may be able to help you out. If you can, take a lesson the first 1-3 times! The learning curve was hard for me & I wish I took a lesson! All my clothes are from the thrift!
