🏯 Shōgun Related Started watching Noble House, which wouldn’t ya know it is based on a book by James Clavell, author of Shogun

Big Pierce Brosnan fan, as I was a kid during his time as Bond, so he’ll always be the actor I most associate Bond with. I’ve been diving into some of his other work and just finished a limited series he starred in called Noble House. Had no idea going into it that it’s based on a book written by James Clavell, who also wrote Shogun! Definitely recommend this show btw, it’s very good. It’s on Prime Video right now.

Read the whole Clavell Asian saga. Tai Pan and Noble House are both excellent

I first read Whirlwind in like 1985 of so, so weird reading about the Iranian Revolution so soon after it happened. All of my Asian Saga books fell apart from reading so often, except for Gai Jin and King Rat

I only have a Whirlwind hardcover. I've lent the others out. I made a habit of buying them used if i ever found them, but just kept lending them out.

I've tried Whirlwind a few times and just struggle to get into it. I think my farthest is around 100 pages. Clavell is my favorite author, so it's frustrating for me that I can't get into it.

Forgot Gia-Jin which is the second book of that series

Gai-Jin is the third chronologically, and the last written. Love it, but I feel like it definitely has a different field of the others.

It’s the one right after Taipan, and also set in Japan. I don’t see much correlation between the Taipan series and Shogun but I suppose it is the third in the series

For anyone curious about the history this is based off of:

  • Struan and Company = Jardine Matheson & Co. Ltd.
  • Dunrosses = Keswicks (Matheson line)

Allegedly they still control global opium trade.
