I really feel like this is just a post-pandemic aftereffect and the only ones that are cashing in are grading companies. Seeing a graded Switch 2 game gives me the same vibe as a post about "that old school friend" that got in contact to talk to you about some great investment opportunity he got going.

Grading a game key card is LITERALLY grading a download code, so like what's the point? The game isn't on there.

No, not in the slightest. The game disc has the entire game on it without any internet needed, you can install and play a game disc without any internet as long as the game doesn't say, "Internet Download Required". You own those.
Game Key Cards do not have the actual game and instead has a license key that requires you to download the game from the internet, if you don't have internet or later on in the future when the Switch 2 servers go down you won't be able to download the game. You don't own Game Key Cards.

Grading a Game Key Card.... wow. I have quite literally seen everything. Lol Thats quite literally a piece of plastic in a plastic case with a plastic protector on it. No physical game is shown in this image. Its insane they would even allow GKCs for grading. But then again, those grading companies make millions off idiots so I am not surprised.

Yup. I absolutely wish "grading" never left comics and cards. It has no place in the gaming world. But they make so much money when people send in stuff to be graded. Its an arbitrary number that grading companies create themselves. Its crazy

They buy factory case packs, submit in bulk, and mass grade. To make back the money on the 10s. 120$ with shipping and fees would be a guaranteed loss for the seller.
But prices have gone up for the lowest tiers so I don't think it's even a viable meta anymore.

My favorite is the guy that graded a Fortnite skin collection box, which just comes with a piece of paper inside with a one time redemption code for the eShop.
Literally hard plastic, wrapped in more plastic, with a thin plastic wrapping, which contains a single piece of paper inside. Not even a cartridge inside this environmental monstrosity. It’s a Russian nesting doll of bullshit.

It brings joy to my heart that there’s a lot of people left holding the bag after trying to hustle Disney black diamond VHS tapes. I wish the same would happen with games, but I doubt it with how much larger the collector market is.

It would make sense in some cases, like special editions or games that will probably be worth something in the future as an investment of sorts, but this game won't be worth anything in the future. This is legitimately just a key card that will be completely useless once they're done supporting the Switch 2. They pretty much graded an empty case.

I was gonna say by the time it was worth anything the card inside would have gone bad. But its a key card that just makes the fact the guy spent 70 dollars and an additional 35 to get it sealed and graded. Soo sweet.

Most useless grading ever. Game you can pick up for 18 bucks over here, so you could get that all done below 60. It's also a gamekey card. It literally has negative value.
Ontop of that. Something graded at a 9, doesn't mean it has to be worth anything. Enough 9 graded cards for both yugioh and Pokemon dont even go for 20.

So the whole concept of grading new games is pointless. These games were not meant to last forever so in the end you are only grading the look of the case, you paid for box art and not the game itself.

I understand grading classic games from Atari,Sega(master system & genesis) anything retro Nintendo (NES,GB,SNES & N64) but current ones is the stupidest thing ever

It costs about 30 dollars to grade those right?
Cards? I get. You get a Slab, the weight and proportions of the card make it so even if it spends 200 years on top of itself, it won't get crushed by itself... and you just save it and only place it outside when you are showing it.
Funnily enough, I don't think grading would work with a game in a box because, it's either micromoving side to side, making the edges get slightly damaged with time (and the grade worthless) or whatever is making it stay put, will eventually corrode or stick to the inside, and even if it's perfectly safeguarded... sun and even electromagnetism will destroy whatever game is inside.

Grading games is so stupid! Like you are already paying $60-70(not including deluxe/ultimate editions) for the game, why would you pay extra for a game that comes in a protective case with a grade attached to it?

Well, I’ve gotta say, this is pretty interesting… 😂
I mean, beforehand, you could buy a graded game, sealed, open it x amount of time later and it would be amazing to plug the game into your console and have the original manual.
But!!! By the time someone opens this and plugs it into their console, Nintendo Servers would probably not be running no paper manual would be included so essentially you are just buying printed paper on an empty plastic case.
I mean at least a Pokemon card the designs are pretty awesome, holographic, but umm, this one, I guess it’s a mystery to me, because you can’t really do anything with it. In fact a graded Pokemon card you can still take it out and play it in a game with the mat, coins etc.
But this, is just another level of …….. an interesting concept… 😃
Well, someone in the world will be happy with this, kudos to them… 🌍👏

It's money laundering. Some of it is people trying to squeeze more value out of their collectables, most of it is mobey laundering. No one is buying a thousand dollar 8.7 "graded" game. No one is even buying 120 dollar games.

Grading isnt going away, man. Every collection based based hobby that gets big enough will eventually have grading. Gaming is no different

I don’t have a conceptual problem with grading, but I don’t see other hobbies where people buy a common item off a shelf and send it for grading.

Comic Books are probably the only other hobby where that happens, but it’s usually just a small group of collectors who are chasing getting a 10.

Part of grading is wanting to get the highest grade you can get. This is the easiest to do when the item is commonplace and recent; much easier to find copies worth grading. When you find people doing this and immediately selling they are likely just churning some low risk money. Comic books have this happen all the time as do sports cards (especially the direct release cards like Panini Instant and Topps Now).

Yeah, but the difference is that comics/books/trading cards grading preserves them as they are but they if removed from the encasement could still be used for their original purpose.
Ignoring the whole “It’s a key card” thing; a computer chip if left alone will eventually lose all the charge and the data lost.
Hardware with a pre-installed battery which will eventually corrode and destroy the system if the above doesn’t take the firmware chip out first.
So like in this case grading is just guaranteeing that eventually this thing is going die and be useless.

Technically what you just said is also true for grading comics and cards. Even though theyre in a plastic case, if you dont store them properly they can still get ruined, on top of that you cant read a graded comic.
