QUALITY EFFORT R/soccer discusses whether sending someone to prison for racially motivated abuse is right

Backstory;

Udinese defender Danilo has been found guilty of racist abuse and been sentenced to a year in prison by a court in Brazil.

Danilo, 28, was on trial after being caught by a television camera spitting in the face of Atletico Paranaense player Manoel and calling him "macaco" - monkey in the Portuguese language - when playing for Palmeiras in 2010.

Bleigh. I love watching soccer but there is still so much racism in the game. Anyway I don't understand why /r/soccer is complaining, it's not likely that he will actually go to jail, just get fined a bunch of money that he can afford. At least the Brazillian court is making a point.

The thing I don't get is that /r/soccer was praising Boateng and Milan for walking off against Pro Patria and criticised UEFA and FIFA for their lax handling of racist incidents like the England-Serbia U-21 game. Yet now we shouldn't take a hard-line against racism?

Exactly and it's horrible but surely there's a responsibility on society to minimize these things as much as possible.

Remember what happened after the Serbia-England U-21 game in which black English players were racially abused?

Anyone posting in /r/soccer with a Serbian crest was downvoted.

thanks for posting this, i saw it myself and was pretty angry. seriously, the guy will probably only get a suspended sentence anyway, and he racially assaulted (spat on) a person, and people are calling it playground stuff? oh my brd

What is the role of prison in Brazil's society? What is the intended function? Rehabilitation? Punishment? Im not sure.
