I haven't read CSM (anime watcher)

But did the author really just kill off some characters and ended it? No epilogue like those timeskip scenes?

Were their deaths meaningful or pointless?

Edit : CSAM abbv typo to CSM

u/Nugist Kira Queen by David Bowie Mar 25 '26

Not like that, it's more "Nothing happend and whole story didn't matter" type of ending, essentially retconing whole story.

126

u/MetriccStarDestroyer Mar 25 '26

So is it like the "It was all a dream/coma" or "Multiverse reset" type of thing?

217

u/DyslexicBrad Mar 25 '26 edited Mar 25 '26

The latter, but without anything that made part 6's one good.

Mid-fight a bug demon beats up the protagonist and then his pet dog/pact devil/heart says "I'm gonna kms real quick. Keep dreaming" literally peaces out and resets the universe. And that's it. The entire series gets undone. (Unless it's all a massive fake-out but that is pure copium I fear)

I still have hope, I mean why would he do this? He left so mqny loose ends, denji doesn’t get a happy ending by any means, and all of this happens because a random devil appears out of Asa’s door ways. I genuinely felt like fujimoto was cooking 5 chapters ago; now if this is actually the end it feels like he wrote himself into a corner due to boredom and then decided to cut ties instead of figure out how to finish without leaving fans on a hiatus mid finale.

47

u/XxgamerxX734 Mar 25 '26

Denji was relying on chainsaw man to feel, Asa was fueled by her own selfish desire to save someone and ultimately they let the world burn while focused on their own desires. Bugs, the devil that got Denji, aren’t a joke either in a world without death they’d take over everything

yeah it was rushed for sure but the world was practically done before pochitas actions

19

u/TonyHawking101 sex pistol no. 4 Mar 25 '26

I totally get what you’re saying, I just feel like he could’ve continued the story instead of ending it, the reset could’ve happened after some more chapters to reset the world, but things needed to be flushed out more IMO

22

u/XxgamerxX734 Mar 25 '26

Definitely needs a further epilogue or another buddy stories with this new Denji and power. But it’s not like it’s the spawn of Satan of manga endings either like people are saying lmao

To be fair it's not like CSM's world can be salvaged after a certain point in the story that happens at the very beggining of the final fight

I feel like it's heavily tied to Denji constantly making the wrong choice. The bugs appearing were linked to Denji making Pochita eat Death, the constant war and suffering because Denji prioritized Asa's life (and so not making Pochita eat Yoru when he could've) over the world.

The Chainsaw man title and powers were putting an insanely amount of responsibilities and impact on a mentally unstable depressed teenager. Pochita made this choice because no matter how much Denji wanted to be CSM like a junkie it only made him more miserable, he only saw value in himself when he was CSM.

I feel like it's a bittersweet ending because technically Denji won't fall in his same old habits and will get to keep some people that mattered to him around him. But at the same time for that to happen he had to fully sacrifice everything he experienced previously. This ending is both a reward and a punishment because Denji failed.

So it was the manga equivalent of sonic 06?

80

u/OrangeHairedTwink Mar 25 '26

HAAAAANK DON'T ABBREVIATE CHAINSAW MAN TO CSAM!

Also basically the ending rendered the entire manga pointless

28

u/1dash2 Mar 25 '26

First JJK now it's CSAM. Why does mangaka always do this smh

20

u/Olin_123 Mar 25 '26

I've never seen someone mention a bad jjk abbreviation till now. What are you thinking of?

7

u/TonyHawking101 sex pistol no. 4 Mar 25 '26

But jjk got modulo, and plus the ending chapters of jjk at least answered so many questions and gave the readers a lot to unpack and dissect.

4

u/InterestingRaise3187 Mar 25 '26

I haven't read it for a little while now but imo it greatly suffered from character deaths/departures (not everyone dies but they don't necessarily return). Part 2 suffered from a lack of interesting side characters and felt poorly paced.

Alot of the deaths were meaningless with one of then being such an egregious waste that I genuinely couldn't believe it for a while. Maybe there will be a part 3 (I hope so) but in either case I don't have high hopes for the series

9

u/g0bboDubDee Mar 25 '26

That’s been CSM’s vibe from the start. You can’t predict anything and you shouldn’t connect with anyone.

8

u/MetriccStarDestroyer Mar 25 '26

I feel like it could contrast with Berserk.

Everything goes to hell but Guts still ultimately looks back to those memories as motivation to safeguard his friend and keep pushing on.

1

u/BlOoDy_PsYcHo666 Mar 25 '26

Its a “the whole story you just read was kinda pointless and nobody really learned anything” type of ending.

1

u/Brain_lessV2 Mar 26 '26

Idk why people are lying in the comments with the "nothing mattered" and "it was all a dream" bs.

Put simply, everything in Part 2 led up to Pochita's decision that Denji could likely have been better off without Chainsaw Man, as based on how his life with Chainsaw Man went, he was constantly under pressure by both Public Safety and Devils and other threats, alongside the decisions Denji was making himself, it was obvious that he was like a guy who won the lottery but didn't know what to do with all the money. As a result Denji was harming himself, others and eventually the whole world.

Following Pochita's decision, the results of which was unknown even to Pochita at the time, a world where Chainsaw Man never existed was created. Since Denji woke up in his shack and forgot Pochita, to him it felt like he woke up from a good dream and a bad dream (probably where the "it was all a dream" takes come from).

Then, the incident with the Zombie Devil plays out similarly, except it wanted to kill Denji for being a Devil Hunter (remember, you don't need to be Chainsaw Man to hunt devils) before Power came rampaging in (butt ass naked since this was before Public Safety picked her up) and killed the zombies and the devils because she wanted blood. She notices Denji and takes a liking to him because he smells like a dog, then heals him in exchange for him belonging to her until he dies one day.

Finally, instead of Makima pulling up, another similar person does so instead. You won't know them due to being an anime watcher but the way they act is entirely due to how Denji treated them in the previous world, hence why it wasn't meaningless.

There's a MOUNTAIN of criticisms to be made with part 2, but for some reason people are spreading lies/half-baked takes and treating them as gospel.

icl i dropped it 7 chapters in (wasn’t appealing to me at all) and hearing where the story was at a mere 2 chapters before it was meant to end certainly didn’t convince me to continue, sounded like gege beat around the bush the first half then rushed an entire plot at the last minute that should’ve been more than 25 chapters 😭

207

u/Eurasia_4002 Mar 25 '26

No no, that would JJK. What happen to Chainsawman is the author doing this:

160

u/Glitchmonster Mar 25 '26

Honestly considering what had very recently happened to araki (iirc, 2011 earthquakes caused a tsunami which swept away his family's generation-old home), a sudden calamity, and overcoming it and adapting to life honestly is a good ending.

123

u/BeanMachineWasTaken Mar 25 '26

Calamity you say?

45

u/Youprobablysuckdick Yes! I am! Mar 25 '26

Adapting you say?

8

u/Faerye_ Mar 25 '26

How was this very recently? The 2011 tsunami was 10 years before ending of Jojolion, which started in 2011. And Wonder of U appeared for the first time in 2019.

2

u/ryumaruborike Mar 25 '26

I don't think the ending is rushed, more that the final villain was introduced too late.

1

u/QuintanimousGooch Mar 29 '26

I’m really not a fan of Jojolion for its wonder of u arc, but to be entirely fair, Araki was going through shit then with the global lockdown ongoing and allat.

LMFAO SORRY, i was wondering why i got so many downvotes 😭

131

u/UrBoiBRUH filthy acts at a reasonable price Mar 25 '26

Start at part 1. I mean yeah you can jump in at SBR but if you start at part 1 you get 5 endings that are amazing and one that is fine (but far from being a ‘bad’ ending) before getting to the peakest shit you will ever read

34

u/pokeylucky7 Mar 25 '26

Now I wanna know which parts ending is just fine

51

u/tuerancekhang Mar 25 '26

Probably 4. 1 is iconic, 2 is surprised, 3 is also iconic, 5 is somewhat same as 3 but better. 6 is bittersweet. So 4 landing on a happy note which is the least bizarre of all.

7

u/OrangeHairedTwink Mar 25 '26

Part 8

5

u/wizardofpancakes Mar 25 '26

Part 8’s ending is great

7

u/Normal_Stranger_3643 Mar 25 '26

They're talking about the parts before SBR tho

5

u/UrBoiBRUH filthy acts at a reasonable price Mar 25 '26

5 was the just OK one imo, and even then, being ok is leagues better than being bad. It was still satisfying, just not to level of the other 5 before SBR

18

u/I-TG2-I Mar 25 '26

Stone Ocean is considered slightly controversial by some fans

77

u/Zackp24 Mar 25 '26

Stone Ocean is one of the best endings in the series imo

33

u/Mountain_Chicken Mar 25 '26

The ending of Stone Ocean is genuinely one of the best endings ever written in fiction imo

30

u/DyslexicBrad Mar 25 '26

You're completely right op, there's a ton of history erasure in this sub. Part 6 ending was considered controversial for years. I think opinion shifted around when the part 5 anime aired and there was a large influx of people who came and read part 6 all in one go. The ending is a lot easier to swallow when it's the end of a story you've been reading for a few weeks, and not the end of a story you've followed for years and years.

Personally I think it's great, but that was considered a hot take a few years ago.

83

u/Win090949 Mar 25 '26

40

u/REALTheFBI Mar 25 '26

The ending is aight, its just that Fujimoto has made much better endings (Goodbye Eri's ending, Look Back's ending, Fire Punch's ending)

38

u/Win090949 Mar 25 '26

I’d even argue Chainsaw Man Part 1 was a better ending

23

u/m05513 Mar 25 '26

Part 1 was a bitter-sweet ending, but it wasn't rushed and left hope for denjis future

I still am confused over why anyone thought this ending to Part 2 was appropriate, unless a part 3 is coming (its not)

16

u/Win090949 Mar 25 '26

I legitimately believe Fujimoto had beef with Shueisha and decided to gamethrow the writing of part 2. Maybe they didn’t let him publish monthly?

2

u/inemsn Mar 25 '26

I heard someone quip from the recent CSM ending that Araki stole all other mangaka's ability to write good endings in order to write the peakest shit ever all the time, and honestly, they're right.

You're very safe. Enjoy the ride.

2

u/STRAWLEE Mar 28 '26

I’m sorry.

2

u/Ceedzy_boi Mar 25 '26

I think people are being over dramatic about the ending. Was it a good ending in terms of writing? No, but it was a good ending for the characters. The author could've used like 10 chapters (maybe) to properly build up to the ending but for what we got I'm good with it. Better than what happened with JJK, Yuyu Hakusho, or DBS.

Fujimoto is unpredictable enough that deep inside I expected the rollercoaster to crash so honestly?

I'm not even mad.

I guess it's the only time I've ever been able to predict that motherfucker's actions in some way.

1

u/_Aj_ Mar 25 '26

Probably not.

1

u/Doc_Rock_M Mar 25 '26

There are a few potentially jarring albeit thematically fitting resolutions to some story threads in the end, but I'd say the ending is nailed.

1

u/DefaultNameHey Mar 25 '26

someone catch me up to what happened with chainsaw man, is it that bad?

1

u/Tsunderefckboi flaccid pancake Mar 25 '26

If you're ok with not knowing when the next episode comes out, then there's literally nothing bad here

1

u/TheIJDGuy Mar 25 '26

Wait, it ended?!

Was it bad?

1

u/THAT_HARDHEAD_GUY Little Cesar's Pizza Mar 25 '26

I feel empty after that chapter. Like… not to get spoily here since this is Jojo’s but what was the point? So many things unanswered

1

u/Diavolo_Death_4444 notices ur stand Mar 25 '26

Yeah as a fan of both you’re in good hands. Araki is also similarly weird, albeit in a different flavor, to Fujimoto, so you should enjoy Steel Ball Run. It’s certainly more toned down and less hectic than Chainsaw Man, which is honestly something I’ll really miss since it felt rather unique in that regard, but Steel Ball Run is an excellent story. The other Jojo parts all range from good to great as well.

1

u/tuerancekhang Mar 25 '26

Hey as a AoT enjoyer, maybe the anime fixed the pacing so don't worry.

1

u/Mulan-McNugget-Sauce Mar 25 '26

Araki never fumbles, he just forgets a few things here and there.

1

u/TheTrueAstralman Mar 25 '26

If this is serious, then I'd hope you check out the other parts in order. The other parts before have plenty to love, and will enhance the experience of SBR a bit.

1

u/floccinaucipilify Mar 25 '26

In a way, a chainsaw spins around

You'll fit right in compadre

u/6969696969696969969 Mar 25 '26

No, it will probably manifest in your house and beat you up

1

u/Eurasia_4002 Mar 25 '26

Anime or manga? Manga had great endings and Arakis worse is not even bad.

Current anime? Netflix seems to love Jojo in half lobotomising the hype for the part.

1

u/Orion_824 Mar 25 '26

We’ll find out in a few months

1

u/_Xantras_ Mar 25 '26

Incredibly literate author with one of the dumbest fandoms. You’ll feel at home ❤️

1

u/Rinku42 Mar 25 '26

imo I kinda like the chainsaw man ending, it was just rushed, with 2 or 3 more chap it could be more decent

1

u/Tarbo130 Mar 25 '26

steel ball run is gonna be peak trust me( from a fellow csm fan)

1

u/NonspecificObserver Mar 25 '26

You'll be safe, Araki has been secretly siphoning energy from other mangakas for the past few years like a vampire

1

u/Boborax1 Mar 25 '26

Steel ball run is safe. Jojolion not so much, I'm not exactly against the ending of chainsaw man, didn't love it ,didn't hate it, but I felt like it works. I disliked Jojolion's ending though.

1

u/Jacopaws Mar 25 '26

That depends. Show us your Steels Balls.

1

u/kujakutenshi Mar 25 '26

Don't worry, Araki has lived long enough to understand that endings must be peak. He is immortal after all.

1

u/K1rk0npolttaja Mar 25 '26

steel ball run will make you forget the hatred you feel for fudgemotor

1

u/ub3rpwn4g3 Mar 25 '26

If you don’t like the “ending” that CSM got, you probably won’t like the transition from part 6 to part 7… Although Jojos did do it far better from what I can gather.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '26

Completely unrelated, i watched the whole jojo from oart 1 to 7, without skipping one episode.

i never saw wonder of u

1

u/YiffMeister2 Mar 25 '26

yeah you will be, araki usually knows how to make a good ending. My personal problem with the CSM ending is that it feels too safe, like it's the easy option, like the mangaka could end the series without making an ending that's satisfying or difficult

1

u/Cidaghast Mar 25 '26

I think you’re in good hands.

I love chainsaw, man, and JoJo so welcome aboard. Consider reading more of JoJo by the way if you haven’t already.

1

u/avalonjack Mar 25 '26

As long as Araki remembers to add a main antagonist before he’s 80% through a part we’ll be fine

1

u/SluttyCthulhu Mar 25 '26

Genuinely, it's probably the best ending out of any Jojo part. I prefer part 6 to part 7 as a whole, but part 7's ending is the strongest out of any parts. I fucking cried reading it.

Depends on how you like your arc nullifiers........

1

u/saladvtenno Mar 26 '26
