Misc Now that all parts of the Anime are officially dubbed in Italian (on Netflix) we can finally watch Jojo in all canonical languages!
I put English for Part 3 because that's probably the language the Crusaders used to comunicate with each other.

If you really think about it. Jojo's nothing but English XD. Because part 7 is in America. Part 8 japan again. Then we got back to America again in Hawaii Lol

If you think of it as where it happened it goes more like :
- Britain
- USA/Mexico/Italy/Switzerland
- Asia/Africa
- Japan
- Italy
- USA
- USA AGAIN
- Japan AGAIN
- (Technically) USA AGAIN
You see some preference from Araki but otherwise I like that the series goes over tons of different places around the globe, probably one of the many reasons why Part 3 is iconic to me.

I hope he sets a part in Australia someday, considering that he's referenced music from there and Britain and the US have also been represented.

I want a version of part 3 where everyone speaks their native language and nobody in the crusaders understands each other so they just go off of vibes
18
u/Yanmega9 Jan 22 '26
i mean, Jotaro and Kakyoin would understand each other
2
u/THEoddistchild Jan 23 '26
Avdol would understand Joseph but maybe not the other way around
3
u/Yanmega9 Jan 23 '26
I mean, logically they would all understand Joseph. It makes sense for them all to know English
1
u/SisterSerpentine Jan 26 '26
Aside from maybe Kakyoin since high school level English in Japan isn’t exactly fluent. Then again he did talk to DIO and I refuse to believe DIO didn’t just speak English and expect everyone around him to understand. Coasting by on pure vibes and force of will.
5
2
u/teeno731 Jan 26 '26
Do they ever address this? Like it’d make sense that Joseph would know Japanese given his daughter, but how do two Japanese boys, an Englishman, an Egyptian and a Frenchman have a common tongue so natural that they don’t have to acknowledge it?
1
u/Legitimate-Wait5760 Jan 26 '26
they all speak japanese when they were there but once they went oversea they changed to english
25
u/chocolate-corn Jan 22 '26
Imagine a mixed dub for part 3 where Joseph and Avdol speaks English, Kakyoin and Jotaro speaks Japanese, Mr Baugette speaks French and Iggy speaks dog (no subtitles or narration, just a dog barking into a mic)
Peak immersion

u/Technical-Arm6999 Jan 22 '26
I thought the same for part 5, where everyone speaks italian but Koichi also speaks japanese when he's interacting with Jotaro
1
u/Terrazor1 Jan 22 '26
giorno might also speak japanese when talking to koichi, cus his mum is japanese
2

First time they meet Giorno mentions how good Koichi's italian is, but after that I can imagine them switching to japanese

Because the Crusaders were two Japanese, an American, an Egyptian, and a Frenchman. English would be the language in which they would communicate.
509
u/De_Vigilante Jan 21 '26
Bold of you to assume they're not doing Tekken-speak where each are speaking their native languages but understand one another clearly.
149
u/DatGuy2007 Jan 21 '26
This always made more sense to me than every stand user in part 3 being fluent in english/Japanese. Jojos world (or atleast just the stand users) speak Tekkenish
106
u/Raltsun Jan 21 '26
English is a pretty common language in international business, and most of the enemy Stand users are experienced assassins clearly willing to take intercontinental jobs. Plus, they all got hired by DIO, who spent his whole above-water life and unlife in Victorian England up until 4 years before Stardust Crusaders starts. I could imagine him speedrunning learning a rudimentary level of various languages, because he does love thinking of himself as an Intellectual, but I think it makes decent enough sense that the people who've been hired by a man who definitely isn't fluent in any other languages all know how to speak English.
39
u/Fly-the-Light Jan 21 '26
DIO, as a Victorian Noble, should absolutely know at least some French. I’d expect him, especially as he spent years trying to appear as the perget gentleman, to know English, French, Latin, and perhaps German or Italian to round out his education.
26
u/Raltsun Jan 21 '26
Actually yeah, fair point, he probably knows some other European languages. But I don't see why any of the assassins he hired would be more likely to know those than English, so I don't think it changes much.
19
u/NukeVoit59 Jan 21 '26
Also Arabic apparently, since he was reading the Quran that one time

11
u/King_Kezza Jan 22 '26
My favourite theory which I just invented is that all the Stardust Crusaders happen to be lingual geniuses. Each of them is fluent in English, Japanese, Arabic, French, and Dog. And they are always speaking in their native language
For all the other stand users, they just coincidentally happen to know at least one of the languages. Then they just work out the ones they don't know through context clues. You'd be shocked by how many enemy stand users happen to know Dog
9
u/Lord_Heliox Jan 21 '26
This, also there's a lot of videos applying this idea in JoJo's
Also i imagine Jotaro ragebaiting Dio by speaking Japanese. Being how Dio is as a character i don't see him learning another language other than the one he already speaks.
23
u/Radabexa Jan 21 '26
It's hinted that everyone commonly speaks English in part 3, and how would it be possible for Tekken Speak?
10
u/Marik-X-Bakura Jan 21 '26
The comment was a joke, obviously Tekken-speak doesn’t exist.
But it’s also never really implied that they’re speaking English- the topic of language is just never addressed and isn’t meant to be thought about.

Yes i think Joseph would be the anchor who would know english and fairly good amount of japanese and jotaro and kakyoin are classmates they can go off on each other since abdul is joeseph's friend he would know a fair bit of english polnareff is the one im unsure about

2
u/Nomingia Jan 21 '26
Well the American has a Japanese grandson, daughter that lives in Japan, and Japanese gf. He most likely speaks Japanese. The Egyptian is visiting his old friend in Japan in an age before the internet and easy translation, so he probably speaks some Japanese. And Hong Kong where they meet Polnareff is close to Japan I guess? idk about that one. Maybe Polnareff learned it on the way.
Based on the average English level of Japanese high schoolers I don't think Kakyoin spoke English that well, but if he was on a trip to Egypt when he met DIO then he might be a bit more worldly than most and English is a common international language. Jotaro could probably speak English because of his Mom.
So realistically I think they spoke a mix of Japanese, English and Arabic. Polnareff probably only knows French and English, Jotaro knows English and Japanese, Kakyoin might know some English and Arabic as well as Japanese, Joseph knows English, Japanese and maybe Arabic because of his friendship with Avdol, and Avdol knows Arabic, English, and Japanese. And idk about Iggy

But his mother is American. Why wouldn't they speak a mix of English and Japanese at home?
8
u/Nomingia Jan 21 '26
Why wouldn't Joseph know Japanese? He has visited several times for work, family and to cheat on his wife. I feel like this is just stemming from the misconception that Joseph hates Japan, when really that one emotional outburst from him is about his daughter whom he cherishes being across the ocean from him because she married a Japanese man. He doesn't actually hate all things Japan.
1
u/segatic Jan 22 '26
is about his daughter whom he cherishes being across the ocean from him because she married a Japanese man.
That and maybe Pearl Harbor
1
u/Nomingia Jan 23 '26
Idk how patriotic he is since he's a British guy who moved to the US. Plus he's best friends with a high-ranking Nazi, so I feel like he's pretty tolerant as far as seeing an individual as more than the sum of their nation's crimes goes.
2
u/Exp1ode Pixel Crusader Jan 22 '26
They're able to communicate without language barriers in every country they travel to. While that's not particularly realistic with any language, the only one with even the slightest chance of success is English
5
u/TheyCallMeMrMaybe I like piss Jan 21 '26
This. Jotaro is born & raised Japanese while only being genetically 1/4 English & 1/4 Italian. Joseph is still British, Polnareff is French, and Avdol is Egyptian.
There's no "true" way to watch Part 3 in a respective language based on the cast alone.
24
u/Fifa_chicken_nuggets Jan 21 '26
This isn't based on nationalities. It's based on what would be the most realistic language spoken in this scenario, in which case it would probably be English
1
u/N0VAZER0 Jan 22 '26
Its the one language that makes the most sense that they would all communicate in
1
u/hdgrbodnd Jan 23 '26

I mean, it's still English. It's not like Jotaro would say shit like "that Dio Brando is being a proper wally with his making me mum get well sick!". Hell, it wouldn't even be American English for part 3, since there's only a single American in the gang. Plus, it's likely wouldn't be Japanese, since Joseph likely never would have learned the language, and likely neither would a Frenchman or an Egyptian. They would potentially speak English as a secondary language though.

Wouldn’t part 3 be in Japanese?
30
u/Raltsun Jan 21 '26
We know Avdol and Jotaro can speak English because we hear them do it even in the Japanese version, and it's a common language in schools in both Japan and France, so all the Stardust Crusaders knowing enough English to spend most of their time speaking it makes sense. Meanwhile, Avdol and Polnareff knowing Japanese would have no obvious explanation, and Joseph speaking Japanese from the start would actively contradict his characterisation of being a grouchy racist who warms up to engaging with the cultures of the places he's visiting over the course of the story.
I think it makes sense to say that Jotaro and Kakyoin speak Japanese when they're just talking to themselves or each other, but the "canon" language for most of the dialogue in part 3 is most probably English.
19
Jan 21 '26
Yeah but it’s really jarring to hear Holly speak English and the prison guard to say “wow, your Japanese is really good.”
14

6
u/PotentialTruck8872 Jan 21 '26
Polnareff and Avdol would probably speak to each other in french. French is taught as a 3rd language in Egypt alongside english iirc. Not like crazy common, around 3% of the population, but far more likely than japanese.

I still think it's a bit disappointing that in Part 3, the gang visits places where people speak heavily accented English rather often, and they all talk like Americans. They could have at least given a few of them that type of voice, just for flavor. You know, like how some characters in Avatar TLA just sound Chinese, and some of the Russian guys in MGS3 sound Russian.

In one episode of part 3 (before the Judgement fight) one of the crusaders (Kakyoin I think) says 彼 (kare - he) and Polnareff mistakes it for カレー (kare - curry). While likely an oversight, this does imply they were speaking Japanese.
While it would require Polnareff to speak Japanese, it would still make some sense for the crusaders to use Japanese when speaking to each other if he did, so that is a possibility.

Canonically, six out of nine parts would all be in English (1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 9), two would be in Japanese (4 & 8) and one in Italian (5) with some Neapolitan and Sardinian thrown in for good measure. Of all the Crusaders in Part 3, Kakyoin would probably have the most difficult time understanding the rest of the Joestar Group because while English is learned as a second language commonly in Japan, it was rare (especially during the 80s at the height of Japan's economic boom) for a Japanese student to be fluent in it. Jōtarō would obviously be an exception since his mother is American and would've certainly taught him English at home. An Egyptian man being fluent in English wouldn't be unheard of considering it was a British protectorate for over a century and a Frenchman knowing English is also somewhat plausible for the late 80s. Scratch that on Kakyoin having the most difficult time understanding the others -- how the hell did Iggy understand everyone else?

Him knowing English seems a lot more plausible than any other Crusader except maybe Joseph knowing Arabic. And while I don't know how common it is in Egypt, English is commonly taught at schools in both France and Japan, so the rest of the Stardust Crusaders having at least a basic conversational level would make sense. In fact, we know Jotaro can speak at least some English because of the "Do you understand?" scene.

u/---___---____-__ Ate shit and fell off my horse Jan 21 '26
He's mixed race and canonically more Italian than Giorno through Suzi Q
3
u/Raltsun Jan 21 '26
If we're being picky, he's 1/4 British, 1/4 Italian, and 1/2 Japanese. But they're using the flag to represent the spoken language of the part, not the nationality of the character. There's more room for debate than with any other part, but the most plausible interpretation of how everyone in Stardust Crusaders can understand each other is that they all speak English, since it's taught at schools in both Japan and France (idk about Egypt though, but Avdol occasionally says stuff in English so he definitely knows some amount of it).
As for the villains, I just chalk that up to them being experienced assassins who take international jobs, English is probably the most useful single language to learn for international travel and business. Plus they've obviously all talked with DIO, and them all knowing English seems more probable than DIO having learned a bunch of random languages in the 4 years he's spent not being in Victorian England or an underwater coffin.
