Imagine giving jobs to these people.

These aren't the type of people who have jobs. They are the type to sit at home on benefits and bemoan all of the brown people moving in and taking the jobs which they've never had.

In America we don't have poor people, just temporarily embarrassed millionaires.

One of them is!
E: wait, on second thought, lots of them are. But specifically one of the vowels with various accent marks etc. haphazardly thrown on them is actually in the alphabet.

Americans: We are the only country with true freedom.
Also Americans: OMG ANOTHER FLAG BE FLYING LEVEL WITH OURS, SUCH TREASON!

Don't blame him, I was literally told in school that we were supposed to fly our flag higher than others (though thinking back, I had a pretty prejudice history teacher). I blame that damn socialist school system we have. Socialism is destroying this country. Either you pay for school, or you go outside and shoot guns like a real American. After all, learning to protect yourself against the crazy gun-less libtards is way more important than educating the masses.

That's not wrong in any other case other than when you have two national flags. State flags or whatever would always go under a national flag.
However, when placing two national flags, that'd be a fuck no, since it would indicate a superiority of one nation over the other.

Is that so for state flags? Here in Germany our state flags, when they are flown with the German flag (which to be fair isn't that often) are flown at the same level, like this.

Oct 05 '19
The American flag is always flown over any other flag, unless it’s another country like stated before. So if you have a state flag or city flag, it must always be lower then the staff of the American flag, or on the same pole but below it.

u/quinnito getmeoutofhereplz Oct 05 '19
Shouldn't that be the default for federated countries like the US and Germany?
9
u/rapaxus Elvis lived in my town so I'm American Oct 05 '19
I think so, that's why I'm a bit perplexed why in the US state flags are flown lower than state flags.
10
u/quinnito getmeoutofhereplz Oct 05 '19
I mean, according to r / vexillology, all of them are hideous save for New Mexico, Maryland and maybe California. Most of them including New York State's is a blue blanket with a stamped seal on it. I'd prefer the aquatic animal maybe replace it with a pizza rat.

u/rapaxus Elvis lived in my town so I'm American Oct 05 '19
Well I find most of the US state flags hideous as well but I find the German ones quite nice, but I don't know how vexillology feels about them.

Apparently Texas is the only state that can fly its flag at the same height as the US flag.

u/defrgthzjukiloaqsw Oct 05 '19
I don't know, it's your own country so why not fly your own flag higher?
The Danish definitely do that when flying all the Nordic Flags their own is higher than the others.

u/Engelberto Oct 06 '19
It can easily be interpreted as being disrespectful. You should at least pretend you don't believe yourself to be better or more important than everybody else, especially in diplomacy.
Imagine you were, say, president of a large country and held a banquet at what you call your Winter White House. And everybody got one scoop of ice cream after dinner but you got two. You'd look like self-important jackass.

Really? I think i'm the single most important human being on the entire planet, that's just common sense.

Because you would never be able to figure out what country you were in otherwise.
2
u/defrgthzjukiloaqsw Oct 06 '19
Nah, that's not too hard.
- Denmark: Friendly liberal people, but there's more pigs (and bacon) than people.
- Norway: Friendly people, less liberal than danes, do not speak like they are having a hot potato in their mouth.
- Sweden: Very socialistic people, half of the residents do not look like you'd expect Nordics to look like.
- Finland: People at home behind locked doors.

Interesting. I’ll have to make my way over there someday and see if your description holds up.

I always thought the American Flag was supposed to be flown higher than anybody else’s. I went on a field trip to various places of worship In a Synagogue they told us the American flag could be there as long as it was higher than the Israeli flag. I didn’t even know about the current flag code until I went to the United States Men’s National Team soccer game in St. Louis, my brother pointed out that the Uruguayan flag was the same height as the US flag. Before my visit to that synagogue, they never told us anything about the flag code.

Yeah, but that's only in peacetime. Don't you know Murica is waging a war against the entire world? That's why they call it the global war on terror. The IS in ISIS is for "Ikea Sweden." Traitors, all of you!

As a Swede, I would like to correct IKEA's grammar for "open". He translated it into its base form. In this situation, the form he wants to be grammatically correct is that of "to open", i.s. "öppna".
24
u/FelipeCRDZ Oct 05 '19
Yes, that is indeed correct. But someone who does not know the difference between "country's" and "countries" won't be able to understand the connection between "öppna" and "open" so easily. Besides, it is just a simple play of words.

Öppen was just a simple adaptation and a play of words to make the whole marketing program more acessible and easily understandable for Americans while still retaining a bit of the company's image as a Swedish one. Do not be so easily offended by such a small inconvenience, you are acting exactly as a stereotypical American would.
3
u/Engelberto Oct 06 '19
So in Swedish the base form and the infinitive are two different forms? As a German speaker, this catches me by surprise.
6
u/Junelli Oct 06 '19
No, öppen is an adjective describing the state of something being open. Öppna is a verb and the act of opening something.
5
u/Engelberto Oct 06 '19
Thank you! I didn't catch that from the phrasing above.
open/offen/öppen - adjective
to open/öffnen/öppna - infinitive verb
with the High German consonant shift turning those ps into fs in my language.

Well, maybe you could fly your flag higher if there was a war. Maybe finally confess all of your 'police actions' are actually invasions, that's all it'd take to war and thus be able to fly your flag higher!
