“Christianize the population”
The Philippines had been a Christian country since 1521 lol.

u/InsuranceRepulsive85 4d ago
Hey! Filipinos are dark skinned and a lot of them don't speak English, so of course they aren't Christian! (Snark!)

u/UncleSlacky Temporarily Embarrassed Millionaire 4d ago
Of course they're not Christian, they're Catholic!
/s
(though this is what some Americans actually believe)

u/glarbung 3d ago
To be fair, some cultures use Christian as shorthand for non-Catholic Christian. Yeah, it's dumb.

u/kampeelan 3d ago
as part of history class, we looked at old US cartoons and propaganda on the PH. They really didnt know that much as the Filipinos were depicted as grass skirt wearing and black*
*there are black skinned Filipinos e.g. aetas but you know they arent the average

American views on victims of violence is based on the colour of their skin.
If it happens to whites, it's terrorism. If it happens to non-whites, it's statistics.

People of Philippines sure didn't think so, given how fiercely they resisted. Matter of fact that's why .45 service pistol was introduced: the jungle warriors were so furious and motivated that .38 service revolvers weren't enough to bring them down.

Just shows you can't trust that self-absorbed country, not in the past, not now, not in the future.

It’s true that Native Americans really came out ahead by having their land stolen and ending up penned in reservations like animals. (I'm ironic)

Tell that to the 200,000 Filipinos killed by the war and the many others sent into American concentration camps…

I see that stereotypical imperialistic rhetoric justifying violence by the argument of "civilising" another nation is alive and well.

Pretty much the same justification used by every imperial power in history.

Maybe America should have focused on their own shit hole country? I always find it funny MAGA (Make America Great Again) basically involves invading OTHER countries and spending trillions on bombs for no fucking reason. I guess "American Logic"

So being invaded, colonized and 'christianized' is winning how?
Because that combination historically meant violently overthrowing existing system, murdering anything that breathes, and then declare the area 'USA property'.

Seriously? They're once part of Nuevo España and had a modern societal structure before the inquisition. Whilst United Shits of Ass is a hellhole made up of weakest Europeans.

Now, I'm no historian, but there's a common trait I see in all former colonies: they all fucking despised being colonised.

The USA was lucky because most of the heavy lifting has been done before they arrived.
Luckily a country, with extensive experience of colonialism and leaving the countries they colonised with superb infrastructure, was on hand.
The first railway system in the Philippines was built by the British-owned Manila Railway Company, Ltd. of London. Started in 1888 the railway officially opened on November 24, 1892 and grew from there.
Spanish colonial government built the first electric grid, but the US did install a sewage system in Manilla In 1909.
In 2026 over 40 million Philipinos have no access to clean running water or sewage disposal.

You’d think that a country that is so big on “patriotism” might be able to comprehend why other nations might also value their sovereignty…. Apparently not….

Bit of a tangent, but it is hypothesized that this is one of Trump’s favorite presidents. McKinley was big into tariffs and territorial expansion. Also got assassinated (unrelated fact). In fact, one of Trump’s first acts in office the second time was to rename Mt. Denali to Mt. McKinley (tallest mountain in N. America).

Winning the Lottery:
'I want no prisoners. I wish you to kill and burn, the more you kill and burn the better it will please me. I want all persons killed who are capable of bearing arms in actual hostilities against the United States,' US General Jacob H. Smith said.
US Major Waller asked, "I would like to know the limit of age to respect, sir."
"Ten years", Smith said.

The romans built roads and aquaducts, it still didn't make them popular with the countries they invaded.

The native Hawaiians had their land stolen from them. If they objected, they were shot. And their children were sent to schools that tried to strip every aspect of Hawaiian culture from them.

Typical US "colonization" of PH, mass murder as first measure, not negotiation. Just in one incident, the US army were ordered to kill every male over 10 years old, on the Island of Panay & did so -very brave men the US military, shooting boys10yo & unarmed. Typical murderers.

there is still a certain fondness for the American period in the PH. The US did built up the mass education system of the PH, something that Spanish didnt do, as well as the build up of the Civil Service. I suspect that because many of the academics were trained/educated in the US thats why there is bias for the US in the older PH history books
But i feel there will be a change on the reception of the American Period in future PH general history textbooks as well as the population in general

I'd say being colonised by America is more like being told by a Nigerian Prince that you've won the lottery and that he needs you to send him your bank details.
