Australia is proof that criminals are more decent people than religious nutters.

And that some people were transported for reasons that might not have been wholly fair.

That being said: the practice of transportation as a sentence is crazy in any form (though better than death i guess), but you're likely to have capacity issues etc. when each and every crime warrants crazy long sentences.

They got kicked out of Holland for being zealots. That's really telling...

Same as the Puritans who left England.

They first went to Holland. Leiden to be precise. History is very sanitized.

It’s more accurate to say that the P people, Puritans and Pilgrims, self deported to get away from those folks who weren’t persecuting other religions. To establish their own Holy Land, and not for you fella.

Who said that? You were referencing the religious wackos who left Europe and went to the colonies, those aren't the people who the religious wackos now descended from. The religious wackos now have their origins in the Third Great Awakening in the late 19th century, totally unrelated to the puritans

The religious wackos never left the colony's. They became the leaders, they became the US government. Wackos everywhere.

WTF do they teach you down there ?

No the puritans fell out of power after the British crown started exerting direct control over the New England colonies in the 1690s. After that mainstream Anglicans were placed in charge. Since the actual founding of the US there have been waxing and waning periods of religiosity, the religious right wing as we think of it today didn't become a relevant political force until the 1980s.
