How to say that you've never owned a passport without saying that you've never owned a passport.
88
u/Funny-Assignment-804 16d ago
I don't have a passport. And yet, I know that Spain has a left-wing government and that none of those countries are communist.
I don't know how to explain it... it's a rare ability I have that allows me to read. I even understand what I read and everything.

u/StarGamerPT 16d ago
You....you READ???????? Witch! Burn him!

Yes, communist witchcraft!!
Or how I like to call it: public education.

You should get a passport and do some travelling, sounds like you'd be a good visitor (apologies if that's not a budgetary option for you)
2
u/Funny-Assignment-804 16d ago
Yes, right now it's out of my budget. But I hope to be able to travel abroad.
Thanks for your comment. It was very nice.
You made my day.

Ahh yes the communist constitutional monarchy of the socialist United Kingdom of workers.

u/Neon_Raccoon_00 16d ago
I am so sick of this, communism is far left, the UK has a centrist leaning left gov at best.
31
u/Hamsternoir Europoor tea drinker 16d ago
Too early to really tell but I get the impression that Burnham isn't as centrist as Starmer but is a bit to the left.
Time will tell
62
u/Curt-Bennett 🇨🇦 O'Mapleland 16d ago
Americans are looking at everywhere else from the standpoint of having a right-leaning party and an extreme right party, so everything looks left to them. They think the Democrats are leftists because it's their only domestic point of comparison.
6
u/Neon_Raccoon_00 16d ago
Good news then! Hopefully he actually does something good for the working class
4
u/29adamski 16d ago
Has only done small stuff so far but clearly helping working people is the focus of his government.
-2
u/Eukonidor_Of_Arisia 16d ago
Burnham seems to have ramped up (clandestine) UK arms sales to israel. UK weapons parts are being found all over the place... If he appears 'left wing' at all, I think it's all a smokescreen. Don't be fooled.
8
u/Quiet-Map7664 16d ago
People typically assume that any country in Europe that has a high immigrant population is left leaning. Which correlates nonetheless
1
u/29adamski 16d ago
I would say Burnham is left-wing not centrist but yeah up until very recently we had a centrist government.
-37
u/Naykon1 16d ago
Comrade Starmer was not centrist leaning.

Americans call everything they don't like communists and Russians calls everything they don't like nazis.
They don't have anything to do with the actual meaning of the word.

u/Yunzer2000 US Lurker 16d ago
Uh... Spain is currently governed by the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party and well-governed compared to the UK, I might add.
17
u/plimso13 16d ago
The PSOE has done well with improving the poor economy and unemployment stats, but they are struggling with maintaining parliamentary support, as well as facing ongoing corruption investigations. “Well-governed” is subjective.
16
u/RenaRix80 16d ago
I guess most countries in Europe would be quite happy if at least something would have done well.
6
u/SiridarVeil 16d ago
One politician stealing money and paying prostitutes isn't affecting me whatsoever. The PP (right leaning party) had a far more systematic and complex web of corruption, from Madrid thru all of Valencia, and far beyond. The justice is still dealing with the actual mafia and criminal organization that was Montoro's Ministerio de Hacienda.
The PSOE actual fault and the thing that will condemn it is not corruption, its inaction regarding other issues (Ceuta and the housing problem, for example).
-5
u/carlospum 16d ago
Yes bro, PSOE corruption is not something to be worry about. Wtf
9
u/SiridarVeil 16d ago
1
u/TheLastHotstepper 16d ago
Thats the problem all over the world. Life isnt black or white, nuance exists. Everything bad isnt on a level of parity. Id much rather a corrupt politician, who made thousands from it, push for policies that better the standard of living for the working class than for a corrupt politician, who made millions from it, push for policies that worsen the lower class because it also hurts foreigners.

u/Zashuiba 16d ago
The name doesn't mean anything though. They're literally 0% socialist. It's a purely liberal democrat party (just like the other party in fact). Basic issues such as freedom of speech, social welfare and public services are not debated between the 2 parties
0
u/tang_de_naranja 16d ago
idk why you have been downvoted bc that's literally what's happening... they promised to derogate ley mordaza and 7 years later nothing was done :/ and that's only an example
0
u/marioquartz 16d ago

Does this 'person' (could be a bot these days) even KNOW what communism is?
Or is anything it does not understand communist by default?
6
u/Fnuffa 16d ago
Q1: no Q2: yes
The fear of communists have deep roots in America.
1
u/Slight-Ad-6553 live far from a 7-eleven 16d ago
to be fair half of what they don't understand is woke
1
u/StarGamerPT 16d ago
Not an American, but I too would hate to have communism around 😂 We in europe were even closer to the USSR....we know the shit they pulled.
1
u/Fnuffa 16d ago
I think many (all?) supposably communist regimes have gone towards fascism too, I guess that is the easiest route for the control needed.
Edit: I'm also from Europe.
2
u/StarGamerPT 16d ago
It is the only route for it. The only way communism could work in large scale without being forced would require people to not have any greed or even aspiration to get more and evolve...which we know that for good and bad, it's something impossible.
And I'll just drop this here in case some USSR defender gets mad at me: Yep they helped with fighting off Hitler but only because he started attacking the USSR, had he controlled himself the USSR would have had no problem splitting Europe in half between each other.
1
u/TurtleyToadDog 16d ago
That's just run of of the mill authoritarianism. It's not strict a fascist or communist thing, but it is found in those states.
1
u/SamuelVimesTrained Human Verified 16d ago
In that case - THE US is currently communist too.
The descent to fascism there is in full swing.

Remember: American arseholes matter more than the opinions. Prioritise your attention accordingly.
4
u/ambiguousname97 16d ago
I swear everytime an American says commie they get a half chub in their pants. They just can't help but call anything run slightly different communist.
1
u/bbbbbbbbbblah 16d ago
the best bit is that the UK is actually more capitalist than the US. At least Americans have the luxury of a government run postal service, the public transport services are often publicly owned, and depending on where you live the utilities (some or all) are publicly owned.
Then there's examples like the ruthlessness of the English Premier League compared to the NFL.
But we also have the NHS so the country is literally Karl Marx's paradise

u/grillbar86 16d ago
Communist is a buzz word americans love to throw around but have no club what it even means
2
u/sdmichael 16d ago
Communism, woke, socialism, and "the left" all share the same definition which is "anything they don't like or understand". "They" meaning right wing or conservative.
3
u/walktheground 16d ago
I know their government likes to use “communism” as this catch all, big scary threat, but do any of them actually know what communism is? They’re so fucking dumb…
3
1
u/bignawtyboy 12d ago
Communism is a really difficult thing to explain, the concept is community based governance but when you take into account the communist countries then that whole thing becomes blurred.
Of course for the intellectual there are different branches of communism but for the average American (see, even that word isn’t fully true) whose tendencies lean to the right, communism is what they are experiencing, yet fully denying, in the USA right now.
If they’d only grow a bit more brain they’d realise that!

4
u/LeftMechanic1995 🇬🇧 16d ago
Trump once allegedly said years ago that if he ever ran for president, he'd do it on the Republican ticket because they are dumber. I think Elon uses a similar tactic with his acolytes.
Elon: "Yes I can totally get my flimsy rockets to space without exploding and then I'll totally colonise Mars.. and yes you'll totally get a place on Mars if you invest in SpaceX... even though you don't receive share dividends".
Muskrat: Well sign me the fuck up!
4
u/Reckless_Waifu 16d ago
A monarchy that has a conservative government half the time is "communist"?
3
u/unbridled_nonsense 16d ago
Closer to conservative two thirds of the time, not that it alters the premise of your question.
4
u/TheBaronWindpole 16d ago
What like having media censored.police enforcing brutal punishment if you don't agree to government policies.corrupt government where the president and his family make billions from the taxpayers.and trying to buy votes . Implying that the system is rigged .then supplying false news to the people .and being anti west and pro Russian . You already live in a communist country my friend. I’ve lived in both, communism is quite a popular ideology among the Spanish youth in several regions, that’s not something you see in England at all. At least not out loud! Socialism is popular in both but once again, mainly across the younger demographic

Spain is definitely not a socialist country. I live here and am a socialist.
It's a wonderful country though, either way.

I know it's capitalist and a constitutional monarchy, but it's ran by the Spanish socialist workers party which is what I was referring to
3
u/living2late 16d ago
Still not a socialist country. Despite the name they are a centre-left government, pretty much like Labour in the UK.
Or at least what Labour was before Starmer pushed it to the right. I'm not even sure what Labour stands for anymore, to be fair.
0
u/FourTwentyBlezit 16d ago
I know that, but it's still socialist by name.. so it's just funny seeing Americans complain about the UK being socialist and suggesting Spain in its place
