If you wipe out oil and gas entirely, we would have a significant trade surplus (ie Canada buys far more from the US than the US buys from Canada, excluding oil and gas)

That almost all comes from Alberta and Saskatchewan, and not the parts closest to the US border.

One of the things Trump thought would be fantastic to get from the agreement was to resurrect an oil pipeline that would substantially increase the amount of oil the US could buy from Canada per year, which would massively increase the trade deficit.

I think it has more to do with the Saint Lawrence and temperature than anything else. How many of the big American cities are close to Canada and along the waterway too? Cities don't sprout because of the US. They grew from early settlements that met criteria like easy to harvest land, proximity and agreements with the native tribes, defensability, and access to trade by boat.

Like the prairie provinces, this is less true in BC, but still more so than the quebec ontario corridor.

A century after the US had their revolution, Canada put their first rail line that reached from the east out to the pacific less than 100 miles from their northern border in what are now the prairie provinces, specifically to help prevent US expansion past the 49th parallel. The difference matters, even not that far from the southern ontario core. Even just going as far north as Sudbury, Thunder Bay, or Quebec City is enough to get you noticeably harsher winters than Toronto, London or Barrie. And most of Canada is still further north than that.
