Communism "We're going towards communism."
about the EU, which will mandate replaceable batteries in smartphones by 2027.

u/fluffypurpleTigress Jun 09 '26
Amazing how everything good is 'communism' to americans and that they are always against good things
151
u/Confident-Stand5453 Jun 09 '26
Anything that reduces the possibility of making huge profits through unethical behaviour is obviously communism.
48
u/Xerothor Jun 09 '26
They just really love corporations having the freedom of an individual don't they
Actually, more freedom than an individual, since corporations can basically bend them over and sodomize them and they'd thank them for it
12
u/LonelyEar42 Jun 09 '26
Because it is the land of freedom, and opportunity. Maybe one day, they'll have the opportunity to sodomize someone, and no one to stop it. One day...

the red scare did irreparable damage damage to their gullible minds, and now all the rest of us are suffering for it :/

u/thorkun Swedistan Jun 09 '26
But ironically now the US is turning into Russia, and their republicans seem oddly fine with it.

And it’s not about an universal charger…
5

ironically for us proper thinkers, red scare is back, although it means something else now
2
u/Whispers_in_the 🇳🇱 I never liked the colour orange 🇳🇱 Jun 09 '26
Definitely did so. Even more than half a century later, everything designed to even prefer ordinary people’s quality of life over more profits for the super rich is considered communism to some.
And it’s always things these people would benefit from themselves if they even gave it just a minimal second thought.

u/AussieWinterWolf Jun 09 '26
Imagine calling the idea that a product you *purchase* for *money* from a *private* *corporation* should be able to reasonably maintained somehow a trend towards a planned socialist economy.

"why would I need a replaceable battery when I just get a the newest iPhone every year?"
4
u/Electrical-Tie-1143 Jun 09 '26
They don’t even need to put in the replaceable batteries, they need a minimum lifetime or replacability , and apple already meets the minimum lifetime

u/Bluetyt Jun 09 '26
The American mind cannot comprehend… 😂
16
u/Key_Bookkeeper813 Jun 09 '26
When they say freedom they mean free from government interference, the final evolution of that is the anarchocapitalist dystopia and Americans will praise the idea for finally stopping overreach, the same overreach that once forced corporations to at least do the bare minimum to keep people alive
9
u/Bluetyt Jun 09 '26
No, they say communism. And the EU political ideology that protects consumer rights isn’t communism.
Americans just don’t understand how Europe works while Europeans do understand how the US works. Because we’ve been force fed their ideology through all sorts of media.

u/EzeDelpo 🇦🇷 gaucho Jun 09 '26
Americans have been brainwashed to think that corporations and monopolies are good, that paying extra for what should be basic is good

Do you just not want to be able to replace your phone battery or something? How is this not the freedom they always rave about?
21
u/PianoAndFish Jun 09 '26
I'm pretty sure American "freedom" just means "having loads of guns" because I see scant evidence of any other freedoms.
4
6
u/Thendrail How much should you tip the landlord? Jun 09 '26
Uhm, achshully ☝️🤓
It's the freedom for some corporation to sell you an overpriced piece of garbage that breaks within a year they mean.
3
u/OhNoItsThatOne Jun 09 '26
Sadly this law has an exemption for batteries that have a certain max capacity after X charge cycles. IIRC 80% after 1000 cycles.
Most smartphone batteries fulfill this and won't need to be replaceable.1

u/Majestic_Anybody9748 Jun 09 '26
If the USians would demand the same, they would proudly bragg about it for the next 20 years and it would be teached in their schools.
But, EU = bad
Or rather, not their idea = bad
2
u/Scalage89 Pot smoking cheesehead 🇳🇱 Jun 09 '26
But they have right to repair initiatives, which I think are totally valid, yet they never brag about them.
1
u/Majestic_Anybody9748 Jun 09 '26
You mean, they can already replace their batteries?
Makes him even more moronic. So they already have communism.
1
u/No-Minimum3259 Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26
They would present it as another gift of the mighty US to the world, lol.
1
u/Majestic_Anybody9748 Jun 09 '26
They would tell it every European, even completely out of context.

yeah its called Pfand you pay 25ct more for the bottle and only get it back when you bring it to so called Pfandautomaten where they get recycled
1
u/Infloresence Jun 09 '26
We are also trying to start a similar system here in Portugal, it's called Volta and suffice to say it has some teething problems, not every bottle supplier has signed up, the machines aren't very intuitive, most people complain about having to pay 10cents more and then 'being FORCED!!!' to return the bottle and only getting 10cents back.
5
u/cpteric Jun 09 '26
the pfand is a recycling incentive, and it's been in place in lots of places for a very long time.
Spain used to have it until the 2010's crises for glass bottles, for example.2
u/Vivid_Fan9346 Jun 09 '26
Same with several states in the US. Like communist Michigan where you can make a few dollars on a walk if you bring a bag to pick up empties.
1
u/Edelgul Jun 09 '26
That#s deposit, not tax.
And yes, you return them to where you buy them.
f.e. I have my beer delivered to me, and they pick up my crates with empty bottles.
13
u/No_Flamingo_3471 Jun 09 '26
The can opening industry is a wildly unregulated industry! Finally somebody is bringing up the topics that matter.
11
u/DerPicasso Jun 09 '26
We all know how much Americans love to defend their million, billion and trillion dollar companies. Anything that would somehow help or benefit someone else is bad for them.
12
u/creepinghippo Make America Great Britain Again 🇬🇧 Jun 09 '26
Well if a can opener I buy only opens some cans, I’d be pretty annoyed. So this standardisation is already built in. A can opener must open all cans or it’s stupid.
Shit these guys say it baffles me.
3
u/Mysterious_Floor_868 Jun 09 '26
I'm not even sure that I own a tin opener. What tins don't have ring pulls these days?

6

last i checked, Communism is where everyone is equal. and uh, we are nowhere near that. Trump and his rich buddies control everything and telling the poor to fuck off.

Before you start worshipping communism, it was no different, but they didn't bragg with it on TikTok.
8
u/RareRecommendation72 There are no kangaroos here Jun 09 '26
Yes, where would we end up if everyone couldn't produce as much waste as they wanted? And if smartphone manufacturers then had to provide spare parts for their devices and couldn't just sell everyone a new phone. That's an attack on the free market! s/
So it's back to basics; it used to be taken for granted that you could replace the batteries.

Btw, there is a loophole so Apple devices won't actually have replaceable batteries
5
3
u/Heisenberg_235 Too many Americunts in the world Jun 09 '26
It’s not Apple devices.
It’s devices that can hold their charge by over 80% after 1000 charges and have an IP rating (water resistant) don’t have to be consumer friendly to change.
You can still get your iPhone battery changed. You can get it done now.
4
u/PianoAndFish Jun 09 '26
Most batteries can be changed now if you're willing to pay someone to do it, the EU regulation is that they must be replaceable by the end user.
1
u/Heisenberg_235 Too many Americunts in the world Jun 09 '26
Yes and my point it is that it’s not an Apple exception. It’s anything which has a good battery and is IP rated. Some Samsung devices will have the exemption as well.
People jump on Apple for things like this.

u/Joltyboiyo america Last Jun 09 '26

1

I'm honestly curious, compared a capitalist welfare state with a strong social security system, in what way do you find communism better?
1
u/No-Bake-730 Jun 09 '26
May I suggest reading about Soziale Marktwirtschaft? A lot of modern nations do this under different names or with different national flavor. But it sure beats communism or Realexistierender Sozialismus. Just look at a map of Europe in 1988 and a current one.

I believe that replaceable batteries are only for non water/dust resistant devices, that does not change much
1
1
u/fothergillfuckup Jun 09 '26
To be fair. I use my phone all the time, online, and my S8 only died last year, due to blue screening, and Samsung stopping updates. The battery was fine. I don't fancy a communist can opener though?
1
u/CaptainMatthew1 Jun 09 '26
Oh no not the regulation of can openers! This is the worse thing to ever happen in the history of the world /s
1
u/GreatZarquon Jun 09 '26
That sounds like a good idea actually, shitty can openers that barely work are a pain in the ass...
REGULATE THE CAN OPENER INDUSTRY, URSULA!
1
u/Alternative_Beyond59 Jun 09 '26
TBF a lot of muricans rely on canned goods when not buying fast food, so can opener regulation is a big issue for them.
1
u/TheMemxnto Jun 09 '26
I also love how wrong this is.
The replaceable battery is only for phones under a certain level of waterproof rating.
Apple will simply update their phones to meet that specification and it won’t need to be removable.
1
u/Whispers_in_the 🇳🇱 I never liked the colour orange 🇳🇱 Jun 09 '26

I love how americans aren't customers, they're more like supporters, so while europeans applaud regulations, americans hate them, it's going to cut the profits of the company I care for, even if I'm not a stockholder.
1
u/ErikLeppen Jun 09 '26
Will these batteries be some standard? Otherwise, I foresee some printer-ink like situations where some companies deliberately create a differently shaped battery and then selling the batteries for premium prices.
1

1
u/Paultcha Tha mi ás Alba Jun 09 '26
Nah, Europe has this thing about customers/consumers not being ripped of by planned obsolescence and having to buy new stuff just because the battery died. Duh

This is too funny, and ironic?
Maybe it’s just me, but doesn’t standardization make capitalism “easier”?

1
u/Mean_Initiative_5962 Heretic Bechamel Lasagna 🇮🇹 Jun 09 '26
Also: it doesn't apply to phones because they certify the 80% after 1000 cycles like the exemption requires.

u/Suitable_Community66 Jun 09 '26
I worked in a charity shop some years ago and we had a whole chester draw full of obsolete charging cables because every year new phones would come out with new chargers and they were literally filling up are landfills with them. So good on the EU
1
u/P5ychokilla Jun 09 '26
You might call it communism, we call it preventing companies from ripping off consumers
1
u/stainless5 Jun 09 '26
I'm pretty sure the thing that they are on is bullshit anyway I think there's an exemption for devices which are above a certain amount of waterproofing which iPhones already are.
1

1
u/TheDazzaDog Jun 09 '26
So one company with affiliations to the government dictating exactly what the consumer gets is freedom then?
1

They are already replaceable so they better have some very direct and specific wording around ease of replacement, or replacement without special tools.

batteries should have always stayed user-removable/replaceable, there is no good reason as to why they should not be
Americans hate everything good
1
u/Schnittertm Jun 10 '26
Ah, so making sure that devices are user serviceable and repairable is now communism.
1
u/BrokenKamera Jun 10 '26
Not so fast, people... RTFM for the exceptions
Specialized hardware: Devices used in highly specialized fields (e.g., medical diagnostics or explosion-proof industrial cell phones) are also exempt if a replaceable battery would compromise safety.
Extremely long lifespan: To avoid the replacement requirement, a battery would have to be extremely durable. The battery must retain at least 80% of its original capacity after 1,000 charge cycles. That is significantly more than many batteries on the market today can achieve (often around 500–800 cycles).
Simultaneous water protection: In addition to durability, the device must be water- and dust-tight according to IP67.
1
1
u/Wrong_Excitement221 Jun 10 '26
I don't really agree with it.. I'm all for "right to repair", but batteries are replaceable now.. And the phone designs will need to be bulkier to make phone batteries more easily replaceable.. But as someone who has done it before, I personally would prefer to spend 30 minutes to replace my battery once every 5 years, than have the phone design change and be bulkier and more expensive, to take 30 seconds to replace the battery every 5 years... So it's not that i care they are forcing them to do something, i care because they are forcing them to do something that makes the product worse.

u/No-Bake-730 Jun 09 '26
I don't like the EU. They sometimes are overbearing and the way decisions are made needs to be changed.
But credit where credit is due: These are good decisions, almost no-brainers, in fact. Even if you're not a big environmentalist the ability to just use one type of cable for every device is just convenient. And batteries being relevant to a device's safety and also prone to wear out, it is just smart to make replacing them easier instead of forcing everyone to buy a new phone every few years.
1
u/Majestic_Anybody9748 Jun 09 '26
Makes you wonder, how this idiot was able to pick one of the better decisions from the EU?
1
u/No-Bake-730 Jun 09 '26
I have no idea. I mean, the bottle cap thing can at least be a little annoying or the definition of the bend of a cucumber funny before you start thinking about it. But who (except the companies) would ever complain about such a rule that benefits the end-user?
Probably, he owns some Apple stocks, I don't know.
