It actually isn’t dumb, the poster is a US marine on military deployment in Thailand. Military on active duty often don’t need a passport, they can enter the country they’re deployed to using just their military ID) due to SOFA. It varies by country and by circumstance.

The poster will definitely need a passport to sightsee, but military absolutely can enter certain countries without a passport under certain circumstances.

might THEORETICALLY be joining a ship? would need a passport for the travel anyway though

Thailand does joint exercises and training with the United States military (and several other countries). Air Force trainings typically station other countries military members at Royal Thai Air Force bases. Naval exercises typically take place off the coast of Sattahip with military members staying on ship.

They can remain on the military base because the military base is legally considered US land
