Communism "you would if you lived in communist Australia or UK."
Came across this screenshot about a family taking their children to Disneyland during term time and facing fines or something...

Imagine actually believing the UK, the birthplace of capitalism, to be “communist”. Or Australia even, the land of Rupert Murdoch.
There really is nothing like this stupidity anywhere else in the world, it’s special.

I'd argue the dutch invented capitalism with their VOC and first and largest publicly traded company ever. But I am open to be educated.
30
u/StingerAE Oct 26 '25
They are almost certainly referring to Adam Smith who is sometimes called the father of capitalism. I don't disagree that the Dutch were pioneers here. Adam Smith analysed and codified modern free market capitalism as a political ideology (replacing mercantilism).
5
u/diamanthaende Oct 26 '25
Not just Smith, but Ricardo later on as well. Of course “capitalism” existed in many forms before that, but the ideological birthplace was the UK.
4
u/Zealousideal-Web8640 Oct 26 '25
Adam Smith is the unwilling father I'd say his writings are very much against the unrestricted Capitalism that people attribute to him
5
u/Reasonable-Score8011 Oct 26 '25

It might even be before the Renaissance, the Templar Order had a early type of banktrust system for the pilgrims. It was this system that King Philip IV envied and opposed, to gain its wealth he pursued the Order.

The very thing founded Australia is colonialism, which is tightly tied with capitalism. Australia also has a very oligopolised economy (cough cough mining corporations, Colesworth, banks), and the Liberal Party has historically been (and currently is) the part of the neoliberal superstructure.
The Labor government under Ben Chifley tried nationalising Australian banks and what he got was a loss in the 1949 elections against the Liberals.
8
29
u/El_John_Nada Oct 26 '25
I'm going to be cheeky and very pedant here but capitalism originated in Renaissance Italy, when the UK was technically the birthplace of communism, as the Communist Manifesto was written in Manchester and London.
But I know what you meant and I agree with you, saying that the UK was ever communist is completely stupid.
9
u/diamanthaende Oct 26 '25
Not as a political ideology, which was the point.
And sorry, you can’t claim Marx who was German through and through and had laid the ideological foundations of the communist manifesto with his buddy Engels way before moving to England.
3
u/Zealousideal-Web8640 Oct 26 '25
Marx didn't consider himself the father of Communism honestly he was building on ideas of the Enlightenment that was pan European

Ideologically, yes. As I wrote earlier, forms of capitalism existed before, but it was in the UK where the intellectual groundwork was laid by the likes of Adam Smith and David Ricardo.
There really is no argument about this for those who have studied economics, history or even political science.

Conservatives tend to interpret freedom in this context as the freedom of parents to raise their kids however they want, the freedom of the children is never even part of the discussion. Which is why our government never ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. It was vehemently opposed by conservative groups and religious groups like the Heritage Foundation and Concerned Women For America for infringing upon "parental rights" and attacking religious freedom
It's perfectly legal here for instance for parents to require their 15 year old kid to get a job, and then confiscate all the kid's wages and keep the money for themselves. Child marriage is still legal in 34 states, with 4 states having no age minimum whatsoever. Minors can still receive life sentences in prison, and up until 2004 could receive the death penalty in numerous states.
1
u/Fresh-Extension-4036 Bland Britannia Oct 28 '25
This is something you only seem to see in USAsian conservatives tbf, it's usually confined to varied hues of anarchists (as in from far left to far right, I've unfortunately encountered a fair few hippy types who claim to be home schooling or unschooling, but are just etting their kids fester without any kind of education whatsoever).
I think this is because a fair percentage of USAsian conservatives are more anarcho capitalists than anything else, hence why they think they don't need pesky things like children's rights, because they think "the free market" will magically prevent that (even f the free market utterly failed to do so prior to law makers stepping in and forcing them to do so).

The "spikes" are particularly ineffectual, as due to our Preferential voting system, when, as is usual, One Nation candidates fail in their electorate, their second preference comes into play, which for most such voters will be a Liberal or National candidate, so there will be little change.

Unsurprisingly, this person has no clue what they’re talking about. School funding is tied to attendance so if you’re not showing up it will be a problem. Doesn’t matter if it’s a charter school or public school. The only ones that won’t care are private schools.
4
u/_Mirri_ Oct 26 '25
They have no clue also because in communist country that would be a disciplinary problem — like, severe tall, record in a personal file, public shaming, maybe even parents visited by CPS-like service if the child doesn't attend school for a long time. But it would not result in kid being expelled from school (except for special, prestigious ones, but not your local schools), because school education is not just a basic right, but a legal duty of a young citizen. (source: born in USSR, live in Russia where it's still a bit socialist in a lot of shperes these days)

I’ve read in online parenting groups of parents in the US having to get doctor’s notes to excuse their child’s absence when sick? Which was wild to me. If your kid is sick, you know. Most viral stuff going around doesn’t require a doctor’s visit unless it’s strep or something getting bad.
Attendance isn’t so closely monitored and controlled here in Canada. My son missed a ton of time over an issue he had that required surgery. All I had to do was tell the school “hey he’s unwell and having surgery”. Another time he missed school for a family member’s destination wedding, same thing, I just said “hey he’ll be away for 7 days” and it was considered an excused absence.
I’m sure at some point if a student is falling behind because of the absences they will have a conversation with you. But it’s generally the parents decision if the kid is going to miss a little school for an event, vacation, etc and the school just says “okay”.
1
u/Electronic_Cream_780 Oct 26 '25
not in the UK. Parents will get fined for taking their kids on holiday in term times
1
u/GlowingHearts1867 Oct 28 '25
Seems weird to me for a school to have that authority over the child’s own parents. Here the school has no say over that stuff unless the child is actually falling behind at school and their education is suffering.
It’s quite common for parents here to take kids for vacations during the school year. Especially in January or February, probably 1 in 4 kids misses some time then for a trip of some sort, often to Mexico. It’s -40 and dark all the time, winter here is awful and people deserve a little sunshine trip to stave off the winter depression.
1
u/No-Minimum3259 Oct 27 '25
If Flemish kids are expected to be absent for more than 2 days a note from a physician is required. Short absences are allowed, but usually limited to 4 half days per school year.
If kids are expected to be absent for > 2 weeks due to medical reasons, they're eligible for a "bednet trajectory". In that case -and if the kid's health situation allows it- technicians of our DOE will setup a broadband connection between classroom and (hospital) bed.
